MR board

dextrous

I know this topic comes up from time to time, but I wish to clarify for my simple mind:

For bathrooms (aquapanel for wet areas)

1/. MR board can be dot and dabbed into position?

2/. Apply bond-it, or watered pva with handful of cement in, to face?

3/. Skim with mulitfinish?

My preference but you can use MR & waterproof it.

1/. MR board can be dot and dabbed into position?
Yes. But you BG advise you leave it 7 days if your going to tile onto it.

2/. Apply bond-it, or watered pva with handful of cement in, to face?
If your going to plaster, Yes. If your just tiling onto it, normally no; but check the tile adhesive manufacturers recomendations; do not use PVA as a primer in wet areas.

3/. Skim with mulitfinish?
If your tiling you don’t need to plaster first, just sick the tiles straight onto the boards; but if it’s only ½ tiled then skim the bit that’s not being tiled. You can use Multi- finish or Board finish.

Thanks Richard for putting my mind at ease. I owe you a pint

Can see your logic but, personally, I haven’t. All of the work I do is on refurbishment but even if forming a new room, the ceiling is invariable already there. Local patching/repair work & sometimes a complete re-skim is often required but it’s not usually necessary to replace the ceiling completely. Ceilings are usually always plastered which in itself will give protection to the board + you should be really using a moisture/steam resistant paint.

Hello,

Forgive what might be a stupid question, but does moisture resistant (green) plasterboard have to be coated with a bonding agent before plastering? Can you not plaster straight onto it??

You shouldn’t; MR PB has moisture repellent additives in both the paper linings & the plaster core & priming is required to ensure good adhesion of the plaster; if you don’t prime it, the plaster won't stick too well.

You will need to use the manufacturers product for any warranty if there was a problem down the line with the plasterboard, for British gypsum boards you will need to apply thistle bond it or knauf plasterboard you will need knauf betokontakt.

Both are expensive so if you have a smallish area why not tape and joint it instead?

Final, final question (for the minute), I take it that bal tanking is suitable for MR board within the shower?

Hi

We used BAL Tanking on Lafargue MR Plasterboard and has no problems when it came to tiling with large 600mm x 600mm tiles.

Hope this helps.
