I am off to the GBBF on Thursday and am in the process of trying to organise my on-line beer list. Can anybody recommend some decent ales from their respective areas. Being from London, where we do get reasonably well served with out-of-town ales, I am fancying some recommendations for some of the smaller, independent breweries preferably from the far-flung corners of the UK.

Advise away....cheers :)

Bradfield Breweries beers are nice - they have a range depending on your particular prefered taste. Brewed on a farm in a little village in the Peak District!

Cup o' tea. Much nicer than swilling stuff that tastes and smells like it's been garnered from the bottom of a urinal.

Copper Dragon Ales from Skipton, their Golden Pippin is pale, light and the most refreshing bitter for miles: http://www.copperdragon.uk.com/

Moorhouses from Burnley, real craftsmen brewing from a row of terraces: http://www.moorhouses.co.uk/

Leyden Brewery near Bury, brewed beneath a fascinating pub with great views and great food: http://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/brewery/255

Joseph Holts, Manchester owned by the family who endowed the Holt Radium Institute and they own every one of their 144 pubs outright. Cheapest beer in the kingdom and a strong man's session bitter, heavily hopped, dark and satisfying: http://www.joseph-holt.com/home.asp

JW Lees, Manchester: enjoyed by some: http://www.wordforwine.co.uk/jwlees/index.php

Phoenix Brewery, Heywood, near Bury, great beers: http://www.quaffale.org.uk/php/brewery/152

Bowland Brewery, Lancashire, competent and affordable: http://www.bowlandbrewery.com/

Coniston Brewery, their Bluebird Bitter is superb: http://www.conistonbrewery.com/

Harviestoun Brewery, a rare beacon of light in Scotland, the country of Euro-**** lager and chilled keg beer with too much caramel added: their Schiehallion is a real ale lager and their Bitter & Twisted is a great drink: http://www.harviestoun.com/

.... is that enough?

Everards Tiger, nice drop.

ABC best, except it's not made any more
Golden Sheep
Black Sheep.
Wadworths 6x (nice, but glassy, and makes me go a bit funny)
Timothy Taylor landlord
Jennings
Theakstons Old P
Owd Roger.
London Pride
Brakspears.
Morland old masters (don't know if that is made any more)
Old Hooky
Youngs RamRod (Perfect in a Ram and special)

There you go, just a few, pretty much all mainstream.

Black sheep bitter and timothy taylors landlord are the two big beers round here, and both a very nice pint. Especially recomment the black sheep.

If you can find some black sheep riggwelter ale, have a try of that too (but not too much)

Riggwelter: from the Old Norse words "rigg", meaning back or shoulder and "velte", to overturn. If a sheep rolls over onto its back and can't get up without help, local Dales dialect says it is rigged or riggwelted.

Richard: No sign of anything from the Scilly Isles I'm afraid.

Andrew: Bradfield are not appearing at the GBBF.

Shytalkz: What public appliances you have managed to get your nose and tongue around are of absolutely no interest to the wholesome folk on this forum.

RR:
Copper Dragon SBA (Should be available)
Moorhouses SBA
Leyden Breweries NA (Not appearing)
Joseph Holts NA
JW Lees SBA
Phoenix Brewery SBA
Bowland Brewery SBA
Coniston NA
Harviestoun SBA

Excellent list. Well that's six on the list. Actually, I had the Harviestoun a few years ago when it won Best Ale. Very pleasant. Thanks alot, Rigid.

Nige: Harveys are appearing but not with the Elizabethan, only the Sussex XX Mild Ale (3%) or the Tom Paine (5.5%). Might have a splatter of the latter.

Tim: So I tube from Camden to Westminster to enjoy the produce of Wandsworth. Time for new horizons, methinks.

Eddie:
Everard’s Tiger SBA
ABC It’s not made any more actually, Eddie
Black Sheep NA
Golden Sheep NA
Wadworth’s 6x SBA but it is not uncommon in London in anycase. W’s Bishop’s Tipple is on, though.
Timothy Taylor as above
Jennings NA
Theakston’s OP SBA I get this quite a bit by the bottle but it is available on draught locally if sought out.
London Pride Behave!
Brakspears NA, sadly
Moreland NA
Old Hooky NA
Ramrod SBA but can get it anywhere

RF: Black Sheep is on the list but TT, though a terrific ale, has become pretty commonplace these days round these parts.

Thanks for all your help, chaps.

what's wrong with London Pride, well kept it a right quaffable pint!!

Shame about ABC, at 3% it was absolute gnat's pi55 but was totally quaffable.

Nothing wrong at all with LP, except I can have this at any of 4 pubs 10 mins from where I live. The main point of the festival is that the attendees (enthusiasts?) can imbibe a few speciality brews from outside their own patch.

Actually I was hoping it gets a bit cooler for tomorrow as quaffing ale is less attractive prospect when the weather's hot. If it stays like this Earl's Court will be redolent of Satan's armpit. :(

That's the problem - I've never tasted a well-kept pint of London Pride. It's always stale and too warm.

ABC may have been light in alcohol but that's what makes a good session bitter - you can enjoy more pints of it before you fall over.

OK, fair enough, I agree with those points. ABC, yes a fine session beer.
