Been quoted £1300 + vat for labour only on:-

New gas boiler to replace existing oil boiler in kitchen
New cylinder in airing cupboard
New cylinder thermostat, room thermostat and heating controller

I am to supply all parts apart from fittings/pipe

Does it sound ok?

Generally sounds ok, but cannot comment fully as we can't see the job to know how involved it is.

Why do you supply parts? Presume you'd want plumber to supply boiler/cylinder etc to remove the "it's not a fitting fault it's the manufacturers fault" thing.

If he supplies all he's responsible for all.

Customers want to supply because they can get parts cheaper from major DIY chains, unlike most plumbers merchants, and they hate the fact that a tradesman will make a little on supply of goods. Simple.

I'd view the amount the plumber made on parts as my premium for warranty and not having any doubt as to where responsibility lies. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Exactly. :)

Obviously in these hard times, people are attempting to save as much money as they can, but it can be a false economy.

Make sure you put in writing that you won't warrant anything they supply, only your pipe work etc.

Who's taking away the old oil tank - contaminated waste, needs waste carriers licence and will have to disposed of correctly, is this included?

And a lot of plumbers are very happy to labour only as it releases them from any material warrenty claims and importantly keeps them below the VAT threshold ;)

Are we to assume the sysem was cleansed recently? Seems no mention of a powerflush in the quote & this could invalidate the boilers warranty. Cant see the plumber worrying about it somehow.

To answer some questions:

1] The reason I am supplying parts is that my brother-in-law runs a plumbers merchant and it would be criminal not to supply parts via him, I am not trying to undercut the plumber just save money where it is justifiable.

2] Tank disposal is being dealt with by a neighbour who removes/fits tanks for a living.

3] Sorry forgot to mention it also includes a 'proper flush through'?

Thanks for your opinions, keep them coming.

A silly and inaccurate statement.

I am not trying to undercut the plumber

Yes you are, there's nothing wrong with that, but at least be honest.

It may be a technicality but I would recommend that the merchant supplies directly to the installer who then supplies to you. That way the installer has a legal responsibility for the correct operation of the equipment.

We are happy for customers to supply anything they wish as we dont set out to make any margin on them.

After the vicious comments I have heard from owners when their boiler needs a warranty repair, I let customers buy the big bits and I supply the small bits. That way I don't have to put up with the attacks when something needs fixing.

Customers may like to think they have all the rights, but they are one half of a contract and would be well advised to not take on the persona of a tin pot dictator.

Oilman,

Why is there a need to get on my case over the wording in my reply to some queries on the topic. In your eyes it may be a silly and innacurate statement but it was meant as merely a statement of facts as to why I was sourcing parts myself.

As for me undercutting the plumber, he actually suggested me sourcing the parts as he uses the merchants my brother-in-law runs so knows the situation seems logical so that he has no extra costs and hassle incurred. Everyone is looking for the best price vs. quality, do you not shop around to get your customers the best deal, are you not undercutting one merchant against another?

I can't for the life of me understand why you actually take the time and seem intent on hijacking posts from DIYers that are asking advice from professionals, surely that is what this site was set up for if you look around the welcome page. Have you ever asked yourself what gain is there in posting a reply you have written? Do I need to add this to the discussion? Will it answer the question/query?

You seem happiest preaching about your extensive and all encompassing knowledge knowledge even when its not called for, warranted or even relevent to the post. I asked for an opinion on a costing and from you I recieved nothing of any use for or against so do I presume you have no professional opinion? instead you choose to take the time to add derogatory schoolboy comments and soapbox rants hijacking the topic to turn it into DIYer bashing.

Why dont you start your own post if you have something you wish to say that is not relevent to any current post?

Thanks very much
