A pal of mine has just put in a new pressure washer in his car servicie area but it doesnt work. When he switches it on he says the unit "buzzes" but doesnt work. He thinks its because of a voltage drop to the machine and backs this up by saying when he measured the current it was only drawing 12 amps. The pump is rated at 3000w on a 230v system so to my mind if the voltage dropped the current drawn would go up or is my memory of ohms law wrong

3000w at 250 volts is 12 amps.
3000w at 240 volts is 12.5 amps.
3000w at 230 volts is 13 amps.

If the machine is on 250 volts, the current is right.

The acceptable voltage is something like 215-252 volts, so it could be any of the above. It tends to be 230-240 though.

If it buzzes it would indicate maybe that the unit aint getting water. Has he checked this???

Probably not, he is a mechanic :) but at least my memory of ohms law is sound. I think the machine is duff

I would guess steve is along the right lines.
Does the machine need the air bleeding out?
If you can hear the machine working (?) then I'd assume theres a problem with the water flow.

The way he described the buzzing it sounded more like a seized motor type buz. I havent heard it he just mentioned it last night in the pub. I have told him to plug his other washer in the outlet and see if it does the same. He hadnt thought of this!! He is good at reparing cars tho!! Thanks for the help
