Morning all,

My water cylinder is an Economy 7 Direct (two immersions) the bottom immersion is fed form an economy 7 supply and the upper immersion works off my normal supply.

Yesterday I fitted a brand new cylinder / 2X Immersions and an economy 7 Hortsman timer; although the top immersion works fine, this morning the bottom immersion tripped. Why??

On the economy 7 feed I also have three large Duplex storage heaters - is this too much?

When I bought the house 10 years ago the above was the original set up and worked fine, all I have done is replaced on a like for like basis.

Any ideas on how I can stop the economy 7 fed immersion from tripping?

Why did you change the original tank ?

Is the E7 heater brand new or did you take it out of the old one ?

If it is a new heater and is the same rating as before (3kw) then it shouldn't suddenly start overloading if it was ok before.

What is the device that trips ?

Are you sure you have trapped no cables when connecting up or are you sure you have connected up correctly ?

Hi ricicle and thanks for your reply.

I changed the original tank because the plumber that came round to change my bottom immersion could not free it and advised he did not want to split the tank.

Both of the immersions are brand new (3.0/2.76 kw Backer Electric Company immersion)

I'm pretty confident on the wiring but will double check.

Look especially inside the isolation switch for the immersion, you may have a wire trapped behind the fixing screw.

It's also worth checking the 13amp fuse in the fuse-connection unit supplying the immersion, the 13amp fuse is normally under a small hatch next to the switch, sometimes held in with a small screw fitting.

Sorry if this sounds stupid... what am I checking the 13 amp fuse for?, I know there is one.

This morning I woke at 3.am to check on the status, interestingly it had not tripped (but I'm unclear as to whether if it was actualy heating), however at 7.15a.m it had tripped? Just before leaving for work (8.am) I was able to switch it on at the 13amp fuse without tripping, obviously becasue the economy 7 supply had now shut off.

Does anyone think that the combination of three storage heaters and the immersion is too much load ? and if so what do I need to have done.

Hi there

It is the immersion heater that is connected to the economy 7 feed that is tripping

I think BS means is it the MCB that's tripping, the thermal switch on the immersion thermostat or an RCD - in other words what protective device is tripping?

Some further info...

I believe I have two consumer units, one for normal suply and one for economy 7 supply, It is the switch on the normal supply that is tripping, but only when the econ 7 supply is live i.e after midnight.

I do apologise for any confusion

If you mean the RCD in the CU, not the MCB for the immersion circuit then £ to a p you got the neutrals mixed up and have created an imbalance when the E7 comes on.

Double check all the wiring - make sure there are no cross-connections between the supplies to each element.

Hi Ban all sheds

when you say :
"£ to a p you got the neutrals mixed up and have created an imbalance when the E7 comes on", are you referring to the immerison wiring ?
