Why do oil burners purge

Will someone tell me why do oil burners go through a 12 sec purge sequence? Something i was just worndering. Thanks

Why and if it did not purge what would happen would it upset the ignition process and what does it purge out of the boiler/flue?
 
you do know that there is a pre purge and a post purge?
Whats the difference between the two? why does it do this would it make a difference? Really dont understand, sorry im just really curious :?
