Is it possible to use a basic Immersion heater type timer ( pin operated) to operate some security loodlights on a timer ( 3 x 500w ) rather than the very expensive Sangamo type of timer ??

It depends on the rating of the switch contacts, and whether they are suitable for use with an inductive or cold halogen load.

Probably. But why halogen floods? They will cost an arm and a leg to run.

Don't you really need a solar timeswitch so you don't have to keep resetting it? Within a month or so of the equinoxes dawn and dusk move 5 minutes a day.
