And the problem is?

I am guessing plain and simply that there may be no earth to the fitting.

No earth to the switch either, no sleeving on switch live wires.
The light is hanging by the cable.
Bad taste in decor too

Oops, forgot to mention that this switch (RHS) operates the outside light.

Is it a trick of the light, or is that black wire not actually connected to A1?

I gather switch A is 2-way for an indoor light.

In which case switch B is for this light. All wired ok (apart from earths).

Unless someone has made a hideous attempt to switch live and neutral. :eek:

<BOOM>

It is connected, by just two strands.

The whole house has metal switches, none of them have an earth!

Tomorrow I fit plastic switches throughout the house and take down two external lights which are not double insulated and are not earthed.

Have recommended they then get an electrician in to do a thorough check for them.

Anyone local to Whitehaven, want to do the check? :?:

The problem is obvious - with both the light and the switch you've forgotten the screws - neither are supposed to be dangling like that.

Well spotted.
I was going to suggest that the wrong type of light was being used as it seems they're just trying to light a spot on the ground rather than flood an area, and someone didn't bother to remove the switch when doing the decorating.
