Hello all,

I recently purchased a new vehicle (2010 Hyundai Genesis). The clever sales staff at the dealership convinced me to purchase some of the protection packages: the 3M Protective Film and some kind of permanent, transparent coating that is applied on to the paint (they called it a "Platinum Finish" or something). They said it will prevent fading from sunlight and make it so I don't have to wax the vehicle at all. I paid $700 for this paint protection and $400 for the 3M. The 3M is great, you can see it, you can tell its there and you can tell it obviously took some time from qualified professionals to apply.

My question is: how can I tell they applied the other coating? It sounds like something that can be done with minimal work and materials. Was I completely taken for a ride on this one? $700 bucks Maybe its not even there!! Any advice?

Do you have a receipt/certificate for the work done, if so, why do you doubt them ?

If a significant layer of protection has been added, this will be measurable with a paint thickness tester.

sorry if I wasn't clear. I didn't order this work to be done after I purchased the vehicle, it was all worked into the final price on the bill of sale contract.

the only documentation I have is that I had to INSIST that they break down the number under the "Accessories" box on the origional bill of sale. they were just going to have one number e.g. $5000 and not break down that this number was a tally of the remote starter, block hearter, winter tires, 3M and paint package. So that's all I have in that respect, no specific documentation for the paint protection.

I got my numbers mixed up: this is what I actually paid:

3M: $700
Paint Protection: $500

Do these numbers seem reasonable? If so I'm content, but if not I'd like to complain that I was taken.

How would we know the prices of Canadian optional extras (ones like 'paint protection' are frowned upon over here btw), you do realise this a UK based site?

We too are offered such treatments over here, and they usually involve the application of 'special' polishes and sealants. They are grossly over priced - but admittedly fairly labour intensive.
Initially they work fine - the car remains gleaming for a while but as for lifetime protection I seriously doubt it. Personally I don't bother with these, preferring to keep the price down as far as possible, but I do apply a resin polish from time to time myself.
John :)

Well I figured you brits kept tabs on what was going on in your colonies

ok you got me I had no idea this was a british site. Thanks for all the feedback in any case. I'm pretty sure the 3M was worth it, but as you all say I got taken on the paint protection. I don't even know its there or how long it will last...... if it is there.
