I have one in my bedroom, now deemed useless due to cavity wall insulation.

Its made of plaster i think, can i knock this out myself with a hammer and chisel?

Should i replace it with a less ugly looking plastic vent, or brick it up and have it plastered over? (I will not be removing it on the outside)

Personal choice, the easy optoin would be to put an internal grid over it, one that closes so, it looks neat and tidy, if not doing anything, the other option as you state is to remove and replace it or render over it, if that is possible.

are you sure its been rendered useless!!!
a properly fitted vent is unaffected by cavity wall insulation 8)

a properly fitted vent has a hose or a channel formed over the cavity because you are venting the room to the outside and not into the cavity

Didn't realise that. This is my first house.

There is a vent on both the inside and outside in line with eachother. the house is 1950s ex council house and the vents are all different styles throughout the house and it probably doesnt have a sealed channel because the cotton type insulation has come pouring out of the vent. Bit confused now. :?
