tiling onto old plasterboard....Replace??

doing a full bathroom renovation - just started the stripping of the tiles....Horrible things !!!

Now, i do plan to have a tiler re-do most of the walls - but am not sure what kind of surface is acceptable to tile onto. My brain tells me it needs to be dead flat, and fresh, with no plaster on show.


that rules out my walls, as there is holes here there and everywhere, the paper is torn, there is bits of old wall paper etc....


Dab+dot new 9.5mm plasterboard all over ??? Would make the job neat i guess.



Secondly, the floor tiles that are down At the moment are cracked+ poorly fitted. these will also be going, in favour of new tiles ( likely the big .8m2 ones ive seen.

I will be lifting the floorboards in order to lay new mains cables, and fit a central heating system. Can someone suggest what floorboards are best to lay, in the knowledge that i'll be having someone tile the floor...Marine ply perhaps ???




Lastly, How do i stop my mrs from moaning, and get her to make more tea ?

best bet is NEW plaster board mate or better still Marmox boards for all your wet areas and plasterboard for the rest 12.5mm each so no problem with flatness. If ya dot and dabbing plasterboard i would still put some mechanical fixings in, same if you use the marmox boards get the correct fixings

If ya lifting ya floorboards best replacing with WBP ply either 19mm or 25 mm, prime/seal the edges and underside of the board before fitting to floor, screw down at 150-200mm centres, make sure all ya joists are sound.

to stop the mrs from moaning, make her feel involved in someway, passing things, holding the tape measure etc, they soon fancy a cuppa themselves, especially if its in a slightly dusty area

i'll be drilling holes in every joist for the plumbing of my radiators - so i'll have very good idea of how sound they are.



deffo 12.5mm over 9.5mm ?? and is marmox that green covered plasterboard i saw today ???? i'll be able to fix it mechanically, as i bought a box of 1000 drywall screws...i only need 100 for the roof !!!!

do tilers prefer the drywall/marmox to be sealed....I'm used to sealing/priming plasterboard for skimming - with 5/1 PVA/water.

No idea what you will pay at B&Q to be honest mate, yes 12.5 is best

Why fit new over old? If you have plasterboard already there just rip it out and fit fresh, if you are not careful the weight if the tiles on what you are suggesting may cause problems in the future, especially if you are fitting floor to ceiling.

Gordon Bennet that looks real bad, good luck with that, I thought I had it bad before I done mine but that really takes the biscuit....

as jc has said ,for your wet areas marmox/etc...

but if you are planning on geting a tile fixer to do the work,then imo wait and see what yo has to say..he will be able to see and advice on what to do(he should get TRADE PRICE) on materials etc and adhesive to siut the job.

spoke to a tiler today, and showed him the photo. He suggested that i re-cover the areas that will be tiled, or skimmed and painted. Either using Dot+Dab - OR expanding foam adhesive. I'll likely use the later for ease - along with some mechanical fixings where possible - even if its just plasterboard to plasterboard.



Nothing is simple in my house !
