Hi all,

I have been renovating my 160 year old granite cottage and I have found a number of wooden lintels that have rotten and need replacing. I want to replace with wood rather that steel or concrete. Some of the lintels also support timber floor joists. I called a saw mill and they can supply the cut lintels in green oak at approximately £15 per lintel.

My question is: will I have any problems using green oak?

Thanks

Wow! that's got to be tough one to anwer here. Truth be told I don't know. But perhaps the companies that still use oak in refurbishment projects can give you an idea of any shrinkage to be expected, as that would be my main concern. I just hope your originals were substancial so that you are happy replacing like for like.

remember not to use any steel fixings on them, for curtains or whatever, as oak and steel don't like each other.

One company I found was as below:

Edit:
Their leaflet on beams aftercare identifies shrinkage of up to 7% in a central heating envirionment (2% to 4% otherwise). That's quite a bit, so perhaps finding aged oak would be a better solution in your case. http://www.oak-beams.co.uk/leaflets/aftercare publication P1.jpg

there is no way i would use green oak. I have used old railway sleepers, painted with satin black paint to seal in the smell of the Creosote

Thanks for the reply guys.

Merlin- I live in Cornwall as well ( Falmouth). Where did you source the sleepers from and what was the cost.

You could poss do it discreetly with a steel angle and still put the oak in for effect.
