Hi,

I received a speeding ticket today in Scotland on my way home to the midlands from Fort William.

it was given to me at the roadside by two officers, 1 was holding the speed gun and the other was writing out the ticket.

first of all I didnt believe i was speeding, the road was a country road at 60mph which changed to a 30mph on a sharp 90deg bend, naturally you have to slow as the bend is too sharp to take at 60mph and as i came off the bend there were 2 policemen about 40 yards down.

1 had the hand held gun and the other was in the side road, the officer with the gun stopped me asked that if i was aware that it was a 30mph zone to which i replied "ok" he then said i was speeding at 42 mph to which i dissagreed straight away, and he said to pull into the side road and his colleage would tell me how i would be dealt with, after which he returned to the edge to try and catch other motorists.

his colleage said he was issuing me with a speeding ticket with the offer to accept a £60 fine and 3 penalty points i said i was not speeding and he said i could contest it in court if i wished. He took my photo card license and filled in my ticket before folding it and handing it to me, i never looked at the ticket as i was so gutted and i just put it in my wallet and drove off as i had a 400 mile drive ahead of me.

when i got home today i looked at the ticket only to find that it had not been properly filled in.

all details are correct except it has a part where the officer writes in his what i did wrong and it reads " driving at mph in a 30mph limit"

it does not say what speed they suposedly caught me at, its almost as if he did not know and left a blank space to ask his colleage after filling in the other details, but then forgot to ask.

so esentially i really dont even know what speed i was spposedly doing apart from the verbal word from the first officer. As far as i am concerned i wasn't speeding, but as far as i can see on the ticket there is no way of contesting it other than in court, the problem is that i live over 400 miles away and it would cost me far more than £60 to contest it as it would probably mean 2 days off work + hotel + solicitor.

any suggestions anyone

go to your local police station and take the ticket with you.
ask them, but as it isn't properly filled in then I don't think they can do you, especially if it doesn't say how fast you were clocked at, they have the same as you and therefore no record of how fast you were supposedly going..

I would have thought that as the ticket has not been filled in correctly, it is not valid and therefore not enforceable but that's just my guess. I'm sure someone else will have a more definite answer for you :D

i'd write 32 in the gap and sharpish.... otherwise you'll go to the nick, and they'll either just write in 45 or produce the undercopy where they added 45 as an afterthought !!

do not do a thing... when they realise their mistake... they will write to you and tell you not to speed and due to an error, there will be no further action... enjoy....

I think you'll find when they try to process the ticket and find the speed has been left blank they will not be able to take it any further. The Police officer wont fill in the blank as he will unable to explain how one part of a carbon copy has been filled out while your half is blank.

and ignore this advise..... that would get you into trouble....

ok, my comment was tongue-in-cheek...!!!

i was issued a ticket for no seat belt, offipig wrote the wrong street, when contested, it was let go.only because of the embarresment on their behalf.

sadly you didn't stack your car in the correct street and die.

Police round our way raided a house as part of a crackdown on drugs, only to find a very irate old lady in the house. When officers checked, they found they had got right number, but on the wrong street. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Maybe the copper was doing you a favour by not filling in the form correctly. But I do believe if you sent a copy to their local police chief he would have to drop the charge.

I cannot see how it can go to court with that kind of mistake or you could claim to be some kind of celebrity and confuse them to hell.

Surely the officer stated at which police station to attend? And you would choose one close to you? As presumably they wanted to see your documents?

Normally I'm against anyone that speeds, or breaks motoring laws, then moans and says 'Oh it's not my fault - it's xyz', but on this occasion, coppers hidden on a bend, where the road goes from a 60 to a 30 (surely 60 - 40???), doesn't add up, and a mis written ticket...goto court.

Indeed 60-30 and there is , I reckon the most ridiculous one of those in the whole country here in Sussex. If you`re driving down the A22 to Eastbourne and fancy a laugh (and a drink @ a country pub .) - Turn left @ Golden Cross to Chiddingly . Come out of the 30 ( Muddles Green) then round a bend and there is another one  with about 600 yds of 60 mph road between . Great Fun for bikers ;)
