Hi

I have recently moved into my first house and am just trying to work out the pipe work for the hot water tank, more me being inquisitive than anything else. If anyone has any spare time to explain a few things I would be grateful.

First off I have attached a pipe diagram and a few pictures, what sort of system have I got is it gravity fed?

The red and metal boxes what are they? They both have adjustments on them the red box has 1,2 and 3 adjustments and the metal box has “main open” what do these adjustments do? These boxes are both cabled to a timer control unit. If I was to get a thermostat wired in the future would it connect to the timer?

Thanks for your time

James

Congratulations! You are the proud owner of an Open Vented S-Plan central heating system.

Open vented = the 'shepherd's crook' shaped vent pipes that hang over the top of each loft tank. (the biggest tank feeds water to and vents the hot water cylinder, the smaller tank maintains the water level to the heating and also vents it)

S-Plan = because you have two motorised valves (silver boxes) - one opens to heat rads, the other opens to heat the water in the cylinder.

Yes, its gravity feed, meaning hot water relies on gravity to get to the taps, rather than pressure.

Unless there's another "metal box"! - motorised valve, you have a C plan system not S plan. See Honeywell site if not elsewhere for details.
Yes you can add thermostats.
If you can't have CH without HW at the programmer it's definitely C plan.

When he said boxes, I thought he meant 2 silver ones.

Yes, C Plan.

The rest of my post is right. I hope!

Hi

Cheers for eveyones help. Yes you need the hot water on for the central heating.

So would the thermostat connect to the timer?

Cheers again

Are you sure this digram is correct? You show a pipe going in to the "metal box" (aka motorized valve) but nothing coming out. Also you don't show any of the central heating part of the installation.

Does the valve look like the left pic or the right one?

The "red box" is a pump, which circulates the boiler water round the system. The numbers are pump speeds.
