Ok, Im asking for good bad advice here. Let me explain...

Im a woman. disabled, housebound, alone and have chronic fatigue with a list of other conditions. I do not have the money to pay someone to decorate and do not have relatives or friends I can ask, neither do I have the strength or ability or energy to sand and strip doors myself before I paint them, I could clean and undercoat them if I knew what paint to get, but thats probably about all I could manage by way of preparation, and of course paint them. I also buy everything online so brands or whatever would be helpful as well please.

The doors have only had their original "new build" paint put on them 4 yrs ago, and Id use white which it already is anyway..

So, the good bad advice Im asking for ....... Is there any paint that covers over gloss without sanding and so on which I cannot do? Im sorry to have to ask what I know is wrong advice here, but hope you understand. I know its not going to be more than a freshener really, I dont expect it to last as long as a job done right, but it would be nice to tidy it up, even if for a shorter time.

hoping but doubtful!

Carole

Carole.

Firstly I am sorry to hear of your problems and you have my utmost sympathy, the doors of which you speak seem to me to be factory primed. If this is the case they should be both abraded and undercoated before the topcoat application. failing to do this will result in early breakdown of your paint system.

Tell me my Dear what part of Cardiff do you reside in.

That should be 'which part of Cardiff'.

Joe.

Thank you kind Sir for pointing out my error, however regarding the advice sought by the op I have a very good reason for asking, so perhaps my desire to help has clouded my grammer.

That's OK mate. It should really be: "In which part of Cardiff do you reside?" :P

Hi Dec,
No need to be sorry, I was just explaining to show it isnt laziness asking lol.

Im not actually in Cardiff, Im about half hour away, in a village near to Pontyclun. The place I live in is a Housing Ass bungalow that was new built 2007, and the doors are same as when I was moved in, so its whatever they left on them.

I think I may have found a solution though. Something called self undercoating gloss, (thought it was a joke at first! Have you used it? Im wondering if doors still need sanding, or if washing with sugar soap would do.

It may be that the doors have bare wood on the edges. The 'knots' must be primed with knotting solution before you start painting. When dry, the bare wood should be primed with white primer. Then undercoat.

If you want a normal gloss finish, you may wish to use may wish to use non-drip gloss. The name says it all. This may allow you to take a little longer applying the paint, and might help you to avoid rushing around brushing out any drips. You can still get drips, of course, so watch carefully before it dries.

Another tip, make sure the surface is free from any dust. And make sure your brush is clean. Keep another brush handy in case you get dirt on it. Keep a closed bottle of white spirit and a rag handy for any spills or splashes. Use newspaper or similar on the floor.

If the doors have been previosly painted then they will require a light sanding at least to ensure the new paint adheres, otherwise it will peel off when dry at the slightest knock.

Thankyou kindly for the advice, and for reminding me of the white spirit, Id clean forgot about that,

Sparkright is of course correct you will need to lightly abrade before application, perhaps one of the better self undercoating paints available is Crown Solo.

The doors should be wiped clean with a mild detergent. and lightly abraded with 400 grit otherwise the paint film will not adhere.

Carole my reason for asking your location was the fact that I had full intentions of offering you my services foc. I know Pontyclun very well since I was born and bred on the hilltop Town of Llantrisant, I now reside in Roath Park Cardiff with my office situated on Penarth road.

Yet the distance volume of traffic and workload will make it almost impossible for me to do so.

Thankyou for all the information, and for the very kind intentions. Im looking forward to the challenge. It will be good for my independant ego too, and I can take all the time I need so its all good. Off now to hunt for what I need.

Thankyou to all

Carole

Personally I think you'd get the best results in Satinwood. Not a high gloss finish but very popular and much less skill required to get a good finish. Self undercoating too.

sounds even better, will do that, thankyou

Joe, you are a gentleman and a scholar  Though was it not Thomas Jones who did rather well with a song entitled " it`s not unusual" .When it should have been " It`s usual "
