I have multiple vertically meandering hairline cracks mainly centred to the back of the house (Internal platered and painted walls) this part was extended I believe 15-20 Years ago.
These are hairline cracks not easily visible and .1 mm width and vary in length from 1ft to 3 ft....they start from top of of the wall near celling and come down... and looking horizontaly start from diffrent distances from the door, it looks like they have been painted on and have re-appeared. The previous owner got plastering done to the property about 5 years ago. There is also a bit of damp in the extension of the property where there is a door to the garden.. The main concentration of these hairline cracks is in bathroom and open plan kitchen dinner both get a lot of moister..

Outside the property has not a single scratch but there is sign of differential historic movement between the new extension and property as said by the surveyor.

There is also hairline cracks on the ground floor rooms celling longish dissconnected from each other but around the same area.. once again the cracks are about 1ft to 3ft long but .1mm in width....

I have been looking all round the house and i see some longish .1mm line cracks arounds stairs wall as well as there is two cracks on the ither side of loft access.

Also on the downstairs there is a crack on the door edge of the dining room which goes straight upwards not diagonal again .1mm goes up to the almost straight.

I have been worrying to much all are hairlines .1mm but long.... what can be the cause the Damp near the outside garden door or plastering wrong or the conifer hedge around the garden... I would appreciate help or advice and also if some body has similar case ?

Numerous hair line cracks are typical of thermal cracking in the plaster, which is nothing out of the ordinary

Thanks for reassuring...... I was just a bit scared even the previous owners said they did plastering about 4 years ago during winter and thereafter they saw these ..... does anyone else here have similar ?

I too have this frustrating problem, new plaster on top of old plaster and reoccurring cracks - I have just spent a day digging out along the cracks (using a flat blade screwdriver) down into the old plaster, I then cleaned the area and used a paintbrush to dampen slightly - I then filled with Pre-mixed Polyfilla, smoothed and sanded the next day - all looks good so far as Polyfilla dries very firmly and doesn't crack...but we'll see!!

The other option is to dig out to an inch or wider along the crack, insert jointing tape along the crack and then cover as above with filler, but I didn't want to create such a mess at this stage.

...but if those cracks reappear I'll reevaluate :D

Good luck!

Other then these multiple very thin hairline cracks on the same wall in the bathroom (Ground floor) there is a patch of pain peeled off dampness with bit of salt behind same on the other side of the wall where there is exit to Garden..... does anyone has similar or can anyone advice on what to do ?

Thanks for your reply.... well the hairline cracks are mostly on the dividing wall and some on the archway to new extension they are like quite a few meandring... may be improper plastering i think..... BUT this damp thing is there as well... could it be causing them... and secondly would you know how much would it cost to get rid of the damp as well as these crack ?...... Also have your cracks settled now :) after filling in?
