Im having a rewire, do I need Cat 5 for a normal domestic computer for internet use? Also what else do I need to consider for a rewire? Was going to have lamps in bedroom on a circuit so controlled by a wall switch, but the wireless controllers you can get nowadays look quite good where they simply plug in.

what else do I need to consider for a rewire?

Are you kidding?

If you are asking that question then you need a competent registered electrician

but the registered bit may not apply as you seem to live in limbo land...
Who does the work depends on your location.
If you live in Zaire then look for a man called Holmslaw - and take pictures of his work..

Yes thats what Im asking. Im no expert when it comes to electrics and when the sparki comes round would like to have some idea on what options to tell him.

Ahh. In that case you need to think what you need in each room, and where they are going to go.

Rather than re-invent the wheel, here's an excellend reply by B-A-S to the same question a wee while ago. Food for thought...

Think hard about where to have sockets - it's difficult to have too many, and also about what circuits to have. The items on the list below won't all apply to you, but they are worth thinking about:

  • Upstairs sockets
  • Downstairs sockets
  • Kitchen sockets
  • Radial for appliances
  • Cooker circuit
  • Non-RCD circuit for F/F
  • Non-RCD circuit for CH boiler
  • Dedicated circuit for hifi
  • Dedicated circuit for IT equipment
  • Upstairs lights
  • Downstairs lights
  • Immersion heater
  • Loft lights
  • Shower
  • Bathroom circuit
  • Alarm
  • Supply for outside lights
  • Supply for garden electrics
  • Supply for shed/garage
Plus any peculiarities brought about by your house layout & construction - e.g. in mine because of solid floors and where the rings run, I have a radial just for a socket in the hall, the doorbell and the porch lights.

If you live somewhere where supplies are dodgy in the winter, have the lights, the boiler supply, and a socket in each room wired to a separate CU, or a separate section in a large one, that can be supplied by an emergency generator - lights, heating, TV and a kettle/microwave make life a lot more bearable.

Cheers, that helps! Is Cat 5 a consideration? Trying to get my head around it all!
