Hi all, brain picking time again, I am going to build ( I HOPE ) a gravel driveway,I know all about getting a good solid base and laying a membrane ( not to sure where to place this ) but I keep getting conflicting information about putting a lean mix of concrete down as a finale base before the gravel goes down, I have seen some that have it and some that don't, one that has it is still looking good after 28 years. All ideas would be very welcome, Reg

Hi Freddymercurystwin, thanks for the website, very good but I still dont know lean mix or not, but a good website. Any more HELP out there please, Reg7

Can I ask what the purpose of the concrete underneath the gravel is? Is this to hold the gravel in place (like resin-bound surfaces) or is it to act as a sub-base?

I'm asking because I reckon if you were to put a thin layer of gravel down over concrete it would be a very slippery surface (like ball-bearings on a wood floor) and the concrete would show through.

But, if you put a thick layer down over the concrete I can't see the benefit that concrete would have over a "traditional" layer of compacted hardcore.

I don't know what else you need to know? Follow the guidance on the page and job's a goodun! Any 'conflicting advice' you have read about using a layer of lean mix of concrete under the gravel is wrong.
