Hi All,

My cistern fill in valve has been making lot of humming noise, while filling up, having read here, most post were suggesting to replace the fill valve with a new one, i have bottom fed ball valve.

I am bit stuck on how to remove the old fill valve as the inlet plastic pipe on the valve is directly attached into isolating valve and am not able to remove the isolating valve from the pipe. Am I doing something wrong.

Please help!

Pair of grips to hold iso-valve and undo nut holding plastic thread.

If the valve inside the cistern tries to turn then just wedge something in it to prevent it or get someone else to hold it.

DITO,

Cheers!

One more thing do I need to close the mains stop cock or closing iso should be enough

Belt and braces, do both.
Better safe than soggy!

Dito, only if the toilet is under mains pressure though, if it's system fed turning of the stop cock won't stop you getting very wet if the iso valve fails you will have to turn of the gate valve from the tank in the loft, if it's not a pegler i would just plug the tank

Thanks,

Ours is mains fed..so assuming iso fails what options will I be left with except whole house supply cut off at stop cock.. Do I need to buy spare iso I don't know which one is this

stop cock will be fine, if you do that then you won't need to turn off iso valve, check water is off first though, see my first reply and there is a link to screwfix with the iso valve you have

Cheers! Wish me luck..

I did saw some leakage onto our first floor from top flr bathroom .. While trying to open the cistern fill valve some water leaked along water inlet pipe and was showing on the ceiling of room below

well i tried to use the method given, but looks like plastic is absolutely gripper onto the iso valve, is there any other way?

cheers charnwood..

what i did was gripped the iso valve from middle and tried to turn the nut on the left in the image..did applied quite a lot of force..but now luck..

will applying WD40 help? or do i need to cut the valve plastic pipe

If you are replacing the inlet valve it will do no harm to cut through the plastic tail of the old one. Cut as close to the fill valve lock nut as you can so as to allow you to remove the rest of the tail from the service valve's swivel nut - if you are going to re-use it, that is.

WD40 can do no harm. Give it a go.

Err, you are turning the nut the right way, aren't you?
Your spanner/grips on the swivel nut need to go from right to left.

It may be that the fitter lamped it up waaaaaaayyyyyy too tight and it is tighter than your strength can manage.
