Anyone know anything about EON smart meters?

How would I change from, say EON to Npower if Npower meters used GSM by EON used carrier line coms? The meter would have to be changed for the new supplier.

Just becase you change supplier does not mean you have to change MOP.

We supply data to every supplier in the UK but we do have prefered customers who want our meters for what they can do.

The domestic market has not been released yet and the meters that are being fitted right now are in effect testers.

But this is exactly my point! However, the meter operators are "selling" this as the finished, all singing all dancing system which it clearly isnt.

I am sorry but that is not true. I know of one major manufacture who is in the final R&D stage for domestic meters and they are developing prepayment meters as well but my understanding is they are having problems making them tamper proof.

O Dear ! what have i started. I do now fully understand the funtionality and the limitations of the smart meters fitted in my home. My original gripe with EON was that they did not fully explain everthing to me,before i was sold on the idea. I do now understand that the rates/bands/costs on the monitor are purely for illustration purposes only. I was led to believe that that they would provide instant, accurate costs at the touch of a button. Basically all it does is send accurate meter readings directly to EON,without the customer or a meter reader involved. O! it also lights up red if i put the kettle on.

A true smart meter must be capable of so much more, including multiple tarriffs, control of circuits via outputs modules & communicating with a home display amongst others.
And controlling individual appliances - e.g. you'll load the dishwasher/washing machine etc and go off to work having set a maximum budget for the cost of running it, subject to a latest start so that it's done by the time you get home.

Or when you boil the kettle the fridge and freezer get turned off.

The "smart meters" being installed now are not capable of any of this.

... and surely they will never be capable of doing any of that? The sort of automation system you are talking about can surely not be implemented at the level of the meter?

Kind Regards, John.

Not only at the meter - the appliances need to be enabled too, but the control of the appliances and the demand-management negotiations will be done through the meter, using information provided in real time from the distribution network and peer:peer communication with neighbouring meters.

One day they may correctly calculate the '1.02264' Volume Correction Factor - per user. Of course there will be some losers and some winners.
Dubious sensors, no doubt - who will check them, or any of the stuff for accuracy? A swathe of 'calibration' costs looming?

Hmmm something pasted in here which doesn't contain 'M'... http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1996/439/schedule/made

Something afoot...

I agree. This is intended to be the 'smart' bit, all part of the stratergy to help smooth out the demand on the grid and enable us, the comsumer, to be able to make cost related decisions on when certain energy intensive things happen.

As I have stated previously, informing the user of the current demand & cost is only a very tiny part of what smart metering should do.
