Is Magnaclean the best?

I am about to buy a 28mm Magnaclean, but does anyone have a view on the competitors products - eg Fernox etc - are there cheaper alternatives that are as good or better even?

No its definetly not he best prone to leaks from all sorts of areas including the magnet itself breaking

If you want a quality product and at reasonable cost then fit spirovent magnabooster combi,this will remove magnetic and sludge contaminants from the system and is hassle free product

The fernox TF1 looks ok but is built out of plastic which i can see having problems ,the spirovent is total brass assembley

I no longer fit Magnacleans, I have had a few problems with weeps and leaks from valves and tops which end up having to be tightened up more than they should be... They are good but I believe that the products from spirovent are better... For starters the spirovent is made from brass and appears to be of far more robust construction. Avoid the Boiler buddy, they are a pain to clean and early ones that I have fitted are showing signs of wear on the threads and stress cracking in the plastic..
 
i use to fit the magnacleans, but have moved over to tf1 due to better design..ie drain point (good/better for adding chemicals)

The Spirocombi looks good, but appears to be only available in 22mm. I have 28mm from boiler, pump etc for a short distance until it splits to upstairs and downstairs zones, so the question is - will reducing to 22mm briefly for the filter then back up to 28mm - will that inhibit flow sufficiently to be a bad idea overall?
 
Spirovents are available in a huge range of sizes - we're fitting a 50mm commercial unit tomorrow for instance.

Magnaclean is a piece of crud, not worth the grief.
 
Worth adding that the Spirovent works by slowing down the flow of a proportion of the water in a patented wire cage, inside this is where the solids drop out.

Higher flow rates will lower the filtration; you must size the unit according to the flow rate.

Hi, just looking to buy a SpiroCombi myself and have the same issue as this (28mm into boiler). Did you install the 22mm by reducing the pipework afterwards and did it work ok?

We fit Magnacleans and don't get trouble with them, there's some horror stories out there but our experience is much better
 
The Magnabooster 2 comes in 22mm and 28mm.
Thanks, but it is the SpiroCombi I'm looking at fitting (it is a deaerator as well).
In that case you are up the creek as the SpiroCombi and SpiroCombi Magnabooster only come in 22mm size.

Why not fit a MagnaBooster 2 and a separate auto airvent (AAV), e. g. a Flamco Flexvent?

A combined unit may seem a good idea, but is it?

A dirt filter needs to be on the return pipe, as near the boiler as possible. But an AAV needs to be the highest thing in the system, apart from the feed and expansion tank. This is because air will naturally rise in the system. AAVs are often fitted onto the flow connection of the HW cylinder. You can see one on the vertical pipe next to the HW cylinder.

If you are using a 22mm Spiro, you might consider using it on the 22mm return from one or other of the rad circuits. They only filter a proportion of the water each time. Over time as the water gets mixed up it will all pass through that point.

This will avoid constricting the flow which might mean a faster pump speed and more noise.
 
Fit the 28mm dirt seperator on the return and a 28mm air seperator on the flow. This is the ideal location for each unit, as water is most aerated at its hottest point ie the flow, and for obvious reasons its preffered to put the dirt seperator on the return although not essential as it can take several passes to remove sediment.
I will add though that I prefer the TF1 as it removes more magnetic debris on the first pass.
