The nut you're on about seals the inlet valve to the cistern. The part he wants connects the pipework to the inlet valve.

Spotted that. 
The nut in the picture is actually the nut you would use if you were fitting a low level sistern. It fits at the end of the syphon outlet pipe thread and holds the sealing ring on the flushpipe in place. Otherwise known as a syphon capnut.
