i keep coming across houses with a lot of mould in batrooms. could the thickness of the double glazed units be to blame (20mm). most of the houses have fans with humidity sensors, trickle vents and air bricks.

It’s not the Modern DG that causes condensation & mould, it’s a lack of understanding why it occurs. DG does an excellent job of keeping heat in & hermetically sealing a property & Building Regulations are focusing increasingly on provision of adequate permanent & forced ventilation to counteract the problem but you still need natural ventilation. Unless the property has a serious damp ingress problem, condensation & mould will be due to “life style” & a lack of natural ventilation; nobody opens windows anymore! Permanently closed windows & trickle vents, cheap & nasty extract fans/cooker hoods that are virtually useless, the insistence of many in drying washing indoors & have long hot showers in an airtight room with a naff, incorrectly installed or switched off fan.

Condensation & mould is unhygienic to say the least but is also a cause of severe respiratory problems; I had very good reasons to ensure we never had any such problems in any of the properties our family lived in.

i suppose your right Richard C the more you insulate a building the more likely the mould unless you supply more ventilation and air flow. it seems simple know you've explained it!!!
