In an act of comedy genius, I managed to cut the live feed to our central heating thermostat. As well as a worrying bang, it unsurprisingly knocked out the heating. I reconnected the wires (there were four - three insulated and a strand of bare copper) with a junction box and the heating came back on again. Hurrah! I briefly thought.
Now, the heating comes on but the thermostat never switches it off, which leaves me with a handful of questions:
>Have I somehow knackered the thermostat itself?
>Does it need to be re-calibrated?
>Could I have damaged the electric controls on the boiler?

From what I can see. The thermostat in the hall (the one I killed) controls the temperature, but all the timing etc, is done by the control pad underneath the boiler. The thermostat is an old Honeywell thing which I reckon must be at least 25 years old.

Any advice gratefully received

Your attempt at self-electrocution may have welded the contacts of the thermostat together.

>Does it need to be re-calibrated?
Not possible with that type of sat

>Could I have damaged the electric controls on the boiler?
Only a test will confirm/deny that.

Disconnect the thermostat and see if the boiler still works. If it doesn't you know that the stat is faulty.

Thanks for that.
Assuming it's the thermostat that's gone, does it seem reasonable to replace the knackered one with a new wireless room one so we can move it about?

Wireless thermostats are not intended to be moved around. They were introduced to make installation easier - no wiring necessary to the control unit.

Thanks.
Does that mean that these are my two easiest solutions?
> Replacing the old static thermostat like-for-like in the same position (i.e to save messing about with the wiring)
> Finding where the old wiring feeds into the boiler and addding the necessary bits and bobs for the wireless control there.

Thanks.

Sounds fair to me. Although assuming you where happy with its location,a s you have the wire in place (all be it with a join) why go wireless?
