Flickering light with dimmer

Hi,

I replaced a single socket with a dimmer last year. The light is a normal 40w bulb. once on it started flickering so i changed the bulb, but even with the new one its still flickering or coming on at full brightness.

Any ideas what the cause might be?

What is the rating of the dimmer.
40W may not be enough of a load.

Try a 60 watt lamp and see what happens

I'll check the load and maybe try a 60w.

and yes i meant switch...doh!!
