Sorry to bother you guys but I'm hoping you may be able to give me some advice.

Before:-

After (well during as they are coming back this morning to "tidy up!"):-
http://gallery.me.com/dreidesq#101515

I gave them an extensive pre installation checklist and agreement and was called about the checklist and was told that the job would be done to my specifications.
1/Before you do anything check with me.
2/No visible pipework longer than .5m
3/Make sure it's a neat and tidy job.
4/make sure there is adequate space around the boiler.
5/No holes in anything without my prior permission.
6/Don't make a mess.

From the after shots provided in the link, is this a good job?

David

I would say,IMHO from the pictures that it is not a good job so far, but then as you say it is not finished yet.
What does look finished is the boiler. What a lash up. They could of used a spacer frame to get the pipework neatly behind the boiler. Where the two 22mm pipes, flow and return, run to the right of the boiler, you will never be able to get to the condensate trap to clean it out. Make sure the 15mm tail hanging down, is connected to the outside as it is the pressure relief pipe.

Are you using the now free airing cupboard for anything? I would have put the boiler in there, out of the way.

Did your installer(s) come recommended to you?

Yea, the job isn't the best in the nation!

However, yoiu're checklist is a little bizarre. Has this been a stresful time? I would be interested in seeing the actual written job quotation and the cost agreed.

1/Before you do anything check with me.
Ridiculous

2/No visible pipework longer than .5m
Impossible to guarantee. Where do you expect the pipes to go?

3/Make sure it's a neat and tidy job.
Should go without saying

4/make sure there is adequate space around the boiler.
If you used RGI's this will be automatic. In fact, people will complin if theree IS space tjsat is required, but not to their liking

5/No holes in anything without my prior permission.
How long do you expect the job to take? Were you there every minute for them to discuss every move. Having said that, things like holes through worktop are predictable, and I will always warn clients before the job is even agreed. Have you a problem with the holes in the worktop?

6/Don't make a mess.
During the job, the house is a WORK AREA!

Sadly, gone are the days when you could almost guarantee that people you employ to do a job would do the 'obvious' and a proper decent clean job. Having been burned once I always include these sorts of 'obvious' instructions in a job outline if I don't know the workers.

I cannot comment on the technicalities, but the aesthetics of that job looks woeful.

Best of luck and hope it turns out well once they have 'tidied up'.

As long as they are Gas Safe and fill in the paperwork - that`s all you can expect in 2012 - you want neat craftsmans work - look @ victorian plumbing , or in a museum

I have not seen the photos!

But your conditions make you sound like a customer from hell !

Although I would do a very neat and technically perfect job my reaction to you would be Avoid Avoid Avoid.........

Tony

If you are asking can a bunch of gas blokes on the internet can do a better job then it were I'll always be yes

mess during a job is unavoidable, also you should of stay of work If you did not want holes in anything or have any pipework on show.

To be honest you do sound just a little bit anal

You should look at the pictures, Tony. I think he has grounds for complaint.

The job was smack in the middle of 7 plumbers quotes ranging from £3500 to £1800.

Companies asked were:-
British Gas £2880 - only do Worcester
Domestic and General £2450 - Valliant
Local and my usual plumber £3500 - Valliant
Eco Plumbing £2500 - Valliant
Another recommended plumber (neighbours best friend) Failed to give a paper quote £2450 verbal Worcester
KP Plumbing £2200 - Ideal
D&G Plumbing £1700 - Potterton

I'm using the airing cupboards space for stairs to the loft conversion. Whenever it happens.

The reason for the ridiculous checklist.
Years of the p being taken out of me by. Car dealers, insurance companies, dentists, tradesmen, salesmen, window companies, ex business partners and my ex best friend from school who b f'd me on some building work to the tune of £70,000 etc. etc. They all love to do verbal quotations and argue the toss when they do something wrong. Mostly making out it's my fault for not being specific.

Now I'm very specific.

Now I spell out what I want, if they can't provide it why even start?
I don't deal with them again.

I've sent a large snagging list and request for info. Unfortunately I have a day job so cannot be at the house today so my elderly father is tending the house. He has instructions not to talk to the workmen and not give any comment to the work being done. If they are there at all.

I wait to see what happens when I get home.

It is reasonable for a customer to expect and get a neat and tidy job. There is no excuse for failure in this.

Just to add I was there all day yesterday and every 40 minutes i would go down and mention what looked bad.

They agreed and said it would be taken care of.

They started at 9.30am and I made them leave at 8.30pm as they still hadn't finished.
Mostly because one chap who did the pipework had forgotten the limescale reducer.
Just as I was asking them to leave the chap said just 10 more minutes. I asked them to leave as I had to go collect my daughter and it still took them 34 minutes to "tidy" up.

I understand the area is a work area but I really wished I'd paid my original plumber his £3700 as he is total old school, asbestos breathing, smoke puffing, dungaree wearing, swearing plumber who's work is a joy to watch. My only problem with him was his price. My mistake.

I await to see what happens later today

You are absolutley right, and there ARE serious grounds for complaint on this job, with or without the checklist. But the checklist does suggest a certain type of client. I would jhave responded with my own checklist, along the lines of my earlier response.

EDIT: Did you actually sign a contract. Have you paid?

Well I agree they should not of taken on the work, 2450 quid is too cheap for the level of attention to detail I would imagine you are after.

Also a national installer like domestic.& general is most likly sub contacting out to low cost quick installers.

You would of been better off going with your local installer that you know and knows you and your needs.
