CCTV, poor night vision

Hello. Hopefully some of you more CCTV tech savvy, can explain the reason for this.

I bought a dome camera from ebay. Just finished installing today but it seems to be poor on the night vision.

The night vision video is has, a lot of noise. I just wondered why it is so noisy?

I though if it had a sony chip in it, it would be good quality.

Is it a rubbish camera and what would I need to look out for for better night vision like that?

It's a below average spec for this sort of camera these days.
Having a sony chip means nothing.

When you say the picture is poor, what is it you are trying to view?

A wide, large area?
Close up facials?

What's the daylight picture like?

The camera is on my wall looking down at the area around my door. Here are two photos, one in day and one at night. As you can see, the night one is very noisy.

I have cropped these but it's still the same. The day and night is not as good as a old CMOS camera I have but it's not a dome camera or night vision.

Other than fixing this to the wall, setting it up and messing about putting the cable through the wall, thats all I did.

Light level Ok day night almost full dark.

Is the signal to noise ratio spec a key factor in the night vision video?

I know it's not the best position but no other way. I may get the sides and some people do look around. If I place a camera lower, someone can rip it off.

My door is in like in a recess, so not practical to place a camera there.


OK so camera is rubbish but what sort of spec should I go for? I don't want to spend silly money, as it's only for home.

Door viewer cam. Gets all the facials.
Some lighting would assist.

Specs are far better, but you still need some light to be assured of a good picture. As with any cam. Lux on this is far lower so would help anyway.

With that style of camera you will always get a certain amount of IR flooding in the centre of the image - that's where the IR lamps are focussed.
As Alarm says, you've mounted it a tad too high - if a scroat wants it off the wall, he'll have it off the wall but you'll usually have a pretty good close up of him doing it. I do believe it is unlikely to occur though.

It would appear the old adage of buy cheap, buy twice is relevant again here.

Yes, but first option was based on cost with the benefit of a decent picture.
The second option gives a cracking picture but does come with a price hike.

Hi Alarm.

That camera seems to be about the same as I have now. I would have to mount that on the wall, so would be the same as I have it now.

and like you say, it were better but I had to remove it recently as I have a new door. I can't put that in my new door, so thats why I have to mount on the wall now.

That is the camera that is also better than this new one and that don't have inferred.

Well due to the way this property is built, I won't be able to come down much more than about 5 or so inches anyway, or I will hit the ceiling and the door way.

I always thought to get a better view, you needed to go higher. I can adjust the camera I already have as it like a ball and eye socket. There are other reason why I don't want to go to far out but want to keep it close as I can to my property.

I did look at other ways. One way was, to remove my outside light and buy a light with a camrea built in. I Found a few but they was really expensive and had a rubbish poor quality camera on them with only SD card support. That is no good.

It needs to be wired so I can feed it to my DVR.

Thanks for the links but they look the same as what I have but cost more. If the night vision is better quality, the maybe worth it.

I wasn't saying they were rubbish just the same sort as what I have. Surely you can't tar all sellers on ebay as rubbish?

I have seen many traders on ebay, some even have shops. If I can get the same camera a bit cheper on ebay, then why not? Ebay like many others do sell rubbish too. like you say.

The links to amazon were just to show you what I was looking at before. If you know of better quality, then I will take a look.


There were a point in asking and I took on board that the camera I now have ,is rubbish but I don't want to buy another camera that cost more, only to come back and say, I have the same problem.

I don't have money to burn. I want to get it right second time around.
