I respectfully suggest that you turn off the next one along (upstream), then having removed the hose union, renew the leaking one with another of the same type, and reinstate the supply.

or, get a 'proper plumber' in. Nice earners these, do a lot of them.

Must admit I hate water :) and Im tempted to call in a plumber but I also hate feeling useless. i was thinking of turning off my main stopcock which to be honest i think is the next one up as the piping disapears into the wall. Open up the valve and drain off the water, then swap the valve
Out of interest what would a plumber charge for this?

You're not kidding. I look after the plumbing for an elderly neighbour. Unfortunately I was on hols couple of years ago when her W M valve started leaking, and she got someone out of the Yellow Pages.

£172 to change the valve. Barstewards.

Yeah I know, I would have charged £272. Undercutting goes on all the time. Don't they realise what they are doing to undervalue the profession?
I mean it takes all of, what?, 15 mins, less if you do it live.

I know. Total amateurs. Didn't even bother to drive her to the bank to withdraw her life savings.

Some people give this profession a bad name. ;)
