Unsprung Rose handles - What mortice and latches ?

Hi All

I have these handles,

which are unsprung rose handles. I have tried with a cheap tubular latch , and also with a cheap bathroom mortice, and they simply do not have enough "spring" in them to return the handles to vertical, they just stay down.

Can anyone recommend a more suitable latch ( i have found a few "heavy duty" ones which i think i need), but more importantly, i can;t find any reference to a more heavily sprung bathroom mortice lock? Anyone any ideas?

IIRC the "Wellington" latches (a square-cased range still made by Union) have a strong spring, and the square for the spindle, when you buy them, is slightly beyond the horizontal, so that when you put the handle on, the spring is already under tension. I think I have seen the same on Imperial locks.

Both are fairly uncommon, they are mostly used to match existing old fitments on refurb of an old property, but you do see them on Ebay sometimes.

You might want to check in case I am talking rubbish again...

Or I might come across one in the garage.

There is nothing to stop the handles going vertical, you can lift them up as well as push down, so maybe a spring already under tension would cause them to sit upright ?

yes it would, the ones I have in mind are intended to press the lever handle against its own stop.

Yours sound rather odd.
