I seem to have suddenly started using vast amounts of electricity as per readings taken over the last few days.

Today, i turned the main switch off and the Ampy Metering 5235A continued to flash 5 times a minute, my clamp on ammeter showing 0 amps

the base load for the house is around 1.5a rising to 2.5a with the air conditioning running.

im assuming the meter shouldnt flash at all with no load, but 5 flashes a minute isnt going to account for 40kwh a day.

im at a slight loss as to what to do now, any suggestions?

lodger growing canabis

are you reading the meter every day and going by the figures ignoring the red ones as they are part units ??

nah, no lodgers.

there arent any red units on the meter

im going on the huge bills and the fact that its still registering use of electricity with the consumer units turned off

was there any estimated bills is the present bill based on a reading??

if you have had several estimates then they tend to keep bumping up the bills to make you give a reading :D

read the meter now and the same time tomorrow and next friday to give a more usual amount
i use 7 to 10 kw a day throughout the year

they are actual readings and works out at 45 per day, this time last year, also actual readings, i was using 6kwh a day. its a small bungalow.

im sure the meter must be wrong

Lets have a piccy of the offending item from where it enters the building to the meter and onto the CU and if you feel macho a piccy of the CU without its cover if you feel safe popping open the covers

How many flashes does the meter say it does per Wh or kWh? Note the meter itself will consume some power.

1.5A sounds OK for 6kWh/day, same as our house.

You need actual readings each night though, to see how the meter's rising.

its boxed in so not easy to get a good pic of the setup. the incoming supply goes to the meter, then to a small consumer unit which feeds two other consumer units remote to the meter. There is definitely nothing untoward with how its wired up and its not being tapped into

its 1000 flashes per kwh

its gone up 10kwh in 3 hours and im just sat here watching TV

read the actual meter over 12hrs and a week ignore the flashing as the digital reading is your registered consumption

we checked it tonight three hours apart, first reading 41978 then 41988

over the last 39 days, it averages at 45 per day actual readings

You mention that you have several CUs.

It's great that you have a main switch that isolates the entire installation

Except that it obviously doesn't.

I don't know where you are putting your clamp, it should be on the meter tails.

A true main switch should isolate the tails that come out of the meter before they go into any CU or Henley blocks. Does yours? You may have to pull off some of that boxing-in. It will be worth it.

45at 14p =£6.30p a day £189 a month £2268

if you have ruled out a problem on your side then i would urgently get on to your provider
but double check your side fully first
