I replaced the gate valve sitting on the top of the HWCT. To do that I shut the cold feed outlet from the CWT however when I close The gate valve sitting on top of the HWCT the hot water is still running in my hot taps upstairs and downstairs?? The purpose of changing it was to be able to isolate Hot water without being obliged to go to the loft.

My question is was the gate valve I replaced supposed to shut the hot water? or is this gate valve used for another purpose?

Turn off cold water mains- check by opening kitchen tap.

Open ALL taps and let the cold water tank drain down.

Replace all gate valves with lever valves (full flow)

Turn on mains and remove any air locks.

what for??? I do not intend to replace with lever just replace gate valve furthermore I think you can use a bung to stop cold water tank no?

Are you saying that there is a gate valve on the top outlet of the copper cylinder......there certainly shouldn't be as this pipe rises to the loft where it curves over the header tank to allow for expansion.
If the outlet pipe from the copper cylinder is divided then a gate valve could be fitted, so long as the other expansion pipe remains open at all times.
Usually to prevent hot water from coming out from the copper cylinder, its the cold water inlet to the bottom of the tank that is valved.
Can you post a picture, please?
John :)

It is indeed divided there is 3 pipes linked to this gate valve one going to the loft the other 2 going down
1 is plastic 15 mmm the other 22mm copper

I don't know what the gate valve on top of the HW cylinder is for - a pic, as requested earlier, would help - but the best way of isolating hot water is a valve on the cold feed going into the bottom of the cylinder.

Because most Gv's are lumos of junk, and before long you'll be where you started. If you insist on a GV, then use a PEGLER.
