Help needed - loud noises upstairs when taps on

Thanks oilhead & boilerdoktor,

oilhead:
- Actually I think that the previous owners would have said if they had a noise, obviously not before we'd bought the place but once all money is transferred and we've moved in why not? I had a long chat with him and he was very helpful with ideas and advice but swears they never had any noticeable noise - they did have carpets and we have restored the boards but it is sooo loud there is no way that they wouldnt' have heard it, though it might not have bothered them so much. Will never know for sure of course!

- No leaks on the pipework added as part of the install.

- I think that they tried turning down the stop tap (at least they tried various ways of reducing pressure to see if it stopped the noise - including turning the mains right down). Turning the mains right down stopped the noise for about an hour, then it was back albeit quieter but still very noticeable and the pressure was no use for a shower where it had been set to so not a workable aproach. Anytime the mains has been turned off or down the noise stops briefly and then returns.

- Cold pipe has a pressure reducing valve but I believe from other posts and a visit from another plumber that this is in the wrong place as the cold tees off before the PRV position.

@boilerdoktor:
Thanks for this advice, three really good leads for things to follow up on. I've just had the same advice from a few others about an expansion vessel (no water meter but not sure about the non return valve so will get this checked).

Hugely appreciate the input, advice and help so thank you...

I think you may have ceramic disc taps fitted, high pressure & c/d taps can sometimes be noisy.

as you now have a combi switch the CH off and get someone to run one of the taps that you are having the problem with and stand next to the boiler and get them to shout when they turn the tap off watch the boiler and see if the burner goes out right away , it sounds like you have a dead leg somewhere in which case the boiler will continue to run for about 10-15 seconds or so

Thank you! I will try this, when I next have someone other than my 4 year old to collaborate! Will let you know.

Jesus, another thread, and now we find out checkatrade are involved.

Sarah. Do what was suggested in the other thread INCLUDING the expansion vessel.

You MIGHT need further pipe clips under your floors, but you need to get the pressure under control first.

Thanks Dan. I will definitely do that now. I'm not in discussion with Checkatrade btw.

Checkatrade, and 90% of its tradesmen are charlatans IMHO. There are a few good eggs, but you haven't found them.

Quarter tun taps or taps that need multiple turns to operate?

Wow, that's pretty alarming - an organisation touting vetting and monitoring and founded on reviews has that reputation in the trade  . What hope is there! I guess I need to leave an honest and fair review once all the questions are resolved...

The kitchen taps are two lever thingys either side of a the curved bit the water comes out. Levers are up when closed and horizontal when fully open. Noise is same level for both hot and cold but interestingly (?) they are noisiest at half open (45degrees).

Upstairs bathroom sink mixer tap is one bit that lifts up and then turns to right and left. Lifting half up isn't so noisy, fully right or left (i.e. not mixing hot and cold) is reasonably quiet, mixing equally creates the din.

hoe many of the pipes have you clamped so far?

The noise only happen when you turn taps on but not other taps? Should be able to hear / locate where the noise is at very high, like a hissing noise, most of the time I come across is the isovalve or incoming pipe to a middle branch on a tee.

Dan.
