windows 8

Right, I downloaded windows 8 Pro as an upgrade for my vista (i know) anyway it did all the checking, then started to install, right at the end, the installation just banged up a completely usless installation failed dialog, with no further information. Does anyone know if and where the installation log is so I can see why it failed as the dialog was just totally unacceptably useless.

You gotta love Microsoft, IE just upgraded itself to IE9 and then promptly crashed  what an upgrade, thank god professionally I use AIX :D:

Update, the web suggested using System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista in order to circumvent this problem.

So I downloaded it, and the installation of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista hung.... cosmic!!

If the machine is still bootable, go into Device Manager and note down all the various devices, graphics card, network adapter etc and then go to the PC manufacturer's website to see if the drivers are available for Win8. If not, try the device manufacturer's website. Then back up all your data and do a clean install of Windows 8, including a reformat of the hard disk. That way no part of Vista is left to get in the way.

Thank you but way way way too much effort.

I give up, honestly this is so utterly **** poor from microsoft.

given up, requested money back, apparently hardly anyone can get the upgrade to work without jumping through hundreds of hurdles, even their tech support guys cant prod it into life. Not good enough microsoft, not good enough by a country mile.

Is this a big hint to Diane to get you an apple thingy for Christmas.

Upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 Pro, no problems. All unattended, come back and all installed. Don't see the problem.

All programs work including some specialist video / projection software.

cost a hell of a lot more than that !!

@EddieM, what PC did you try Win8? I've got one HP 6710b at home (used as TV replacement) that runs Win8 just fine (minus full mouse compatibility though...).

Whenever I've done Vista > 7 upgrades, I've used User Migration Tool that boxes all your stuff up into one file, installed new OS clean and fresh (not in-place upgrade) and then run user migration tool on the new installation. All user stuff is restored. I'd suggest similar upgrade path for Vista > 8.

Thanks, but i cant be arsed with all that I'm really not that fussed... got my money refunded today. :) I cannot fathom a reason as to why ur personal stuff should cause any problem upgrading an OS. Sorry M$ you've really bombed this time.

Upgraded my hybrid mc from Win7 64 to Win8 Pro :- Download took 16 mins, the complete install around 14 mins... 30 mins total. Seems ok after a week of playing about with it.

To provide a neat ramp into this 'modern' OS I found this article :-
