Plug top wiring.

What d'you call the bit of a plug top that comes off when you undo the screw? A plug top top? :)

Broken if you drop it far enough and its not made of rubber.

Going back to Portable Appliance Testing, (PAT is a misnomer actually), then it is like an MOTon your car.

Only reliable the instant it is carried out.
An hour after testing someone could damage it but it remains unreported/quarantined but is still technically passed as safe.
Hence, as already stated, the need for I&T at every use and maintenance of records.

I had to take a portable CD player belonging to our Scottish dancing club for PAT testing recently. The greedy buggers charged £1 for 'testing' the appliance and another £1 for testing the separate mains lead!

I wasn't paying, so I didn't kick up a stink, but surely that's just taking the mick. It only took him a couple of minutes too. £1 a minute must be a pretty good rate!

Edit: Btw, a 'plug' is just a 'plug', isn't it? A 'plug top' must be the back cover!

Edit again: Just seen the asterisks. I only said 'b-u-g-g-e-r'. Is that rude?

It really depends on what exactly the guy is expected to do. Yes he made an easy couple of quid on your CD player but if he he being paid a flat rate per item and some of the items involve dragging large appliances out of awkward locations then £1 per appliance doesn't seem so high.

I can appreciate that. Perhaps they should charge according to time spent.

What I thought was a bit of a con, though, was him charging once for the appliance and again for the lead. If the lead had been permanently fixed, there would have been only one charge.

As I said, I didn't pay so I'm not uptight about the money!

I must admit at first reading I thought you were being humourous.

How much do you think it should cost even if the lead were included?

Was there a queue or might the greedy sodomite have to wait an hour for his next pound?

Just seen the asterisks. I only said 'b-u-g-g-e-r'. Is that rude?
Not these days. Apparently it's perfectly normal.

Surely the moderators are not allowed to discriminate against it.

1. Well I was being serious, but not that serious!

2. It should have been £1 per appliance. I may be splitting hairs, but I would expect a lead that comes with the appliance to be included in the price.

3. No queue, but he had arranged everything connected with the venue to be available for his attention from 0930.

4. I thought it was normal too: I use the word all the time, although not in its literal sense.

5. Their forum: their rules. I don't mind if they want to censor it; just a little surprised, that's all.

if a socket is the bit on the wall, then surely the plug is the bit you put into the socket, and so therefore its a socket top? The bit on the wall is not a plug!

Not intended to be deadly serious - we all know the score here

I was under the impression testing (charging for) removable leads separately was standard practice.

I'm assuming you got a sticker for the lead too? The lead is technically a separate piece of equipment

I've always tested removeable leads as a seperate appliance.

It's just a short extention lead, and could quite easily be wired wrong, have an incorrect fuse, abraded insulation etc.

Or be moved to another appliance which would bugger the numbering system up if it was the same as the original appliance.
