Well, I quoted a price of £50.00 to do a landlords, with three appliances. Was agreed, but then got a call back to say they had sorted it for £35.00. What on earth do they do for £35.00. On a second job I quoted £120 to fit a new fire to a solid fuel fireplace. And onto a plugged gas point three feet away. I was intending channelling out the wall to run the gas so priced it accordingly. Was told they had it done for £80.00. really shocked.

There appears to be a glut of gasmen these days. The guys who live down the road are often home or doing general plumbing.
The lure of big money encouraged people from all walks of life to train up and then there is the EEs and the re-trained soldiers etc etc.
I guess £35 is better than sitting at home.

More and more competition all the time I'm afraid. Shiney new plumbers vans seem to be everywhere in my area, there always seems to be someone new dropping leaflets through doors.

I know of several site plumbers who are chasing domestic work these days. They price low and seem to be happy with similar earnings to what they earned when working for someone else.

Luckily I have a solid base of regular customers, but every now and again you lose one to undercutters. Ocasionally they reappear.

Can't see things changing with the economic and labour market circumstances at the moment. Lots of people still believe the hype.

Can't do a LGS report for £35. Not properly. Especially if there's a gas fire involved. There's loads of rented property around here, and plenty of outfits who do **** jobs for **** money. Some do a **** job for top money. If an innocent person is injured or dies because a crap installer ignored something, didn't have time to do it, or just didn't bother checking that's on them. Some of them may not know any better. We're all up against them all the time. If you name a fair price to do a good, safe job then you've done your best by the customer and at least your conscience is clear.

£35... Yeah you can.

Whether you choose to or not is a different matter.

It would not surprise me if Lee's firm did them for less than £35 !

Not if you're a sole trader with a mortgage you can't - if I was living with my mum, maybe......
