Sorry to post again but my previous post regarding combi boiler recommendations was hijacked by people arguing with joe90

I'm after a budget boiler as I'm moving I'm the next few years but have taken some tips from the forum into consideration, for example a stainless primary heat exchanger. I appreciate you get what you pay for so will try to be sensible in my choice

I am/was looking at the Main EcoElite combi 25 but have found it has a aluminium/silicon HE which is a shame as main seem to have a decent rep on here and is only £555+vat with flue kit at Crossling.

Is there anything close to this deal worth looking at? As mentioned on other thread, my neighbour is a BG engineer and has kindly offered to flush the system then install it. He has mentioned the wb greenstar 24i but this would be a major push for my budget

EDITED: what are peoples thoughts on the Glow-worm Easicom range. only £550+vat with flue kit and stainless steel hex at Crossling.

Thanks in advance, kev

i have just fitted one of these, they come with a 2 yrs warrenty, but you can upgrade to 5 yrs for £99 so this should be more than enough time if you are moving.

WB use a aluminium/silicon HE

He's not allowed to install it. He is only Gas Safe registered when working for BG. How can he certify it when fitted?

if you are moving in the next few years cant see the problem of what you install, even the cheap boilers have a 2 year guarantee, and dont forget even the expensive boilers can be a nightmare, half the battle is proper installation.

Indeed Joe is correct (hold on whilst I pick myself up off the floor).

Your neighbour can't certify the boiler which will be fun come house sale time.

Speaking of which, why worry about the construct of the boiler when you will be leaving in a short while anyway?

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realise that my neighbour wouldn't be registered unless working for BG, I thought it was the person that was registered.
Bloody hell, that means they could send anyone to your door

It is not quite like that....

For example.

I am Gas Safe registered. I did the tests and passed them. I have a card with my picture, name and a list of what I can do. I am only deemed competent if I do the work in the name of my company.
company's name on it.

If I fitted a new boiler for him;then it wouldn't be notifiable because unless my company billed him for it, I am deemed to not be competent.

This is why BG guys can't do "homers" unless they have their own Gas Safe registration, which is is frowned upon unless he is a subby.

Thanks dan

Did you pass whilst with BG or have they paid you for sole right to your gas safe qualification. What happens if someone qualified before they joined BG

I'm not sure on his standing, only that he works for BG

registration and qualification are 2 different things. everyone gets qualified in the same way, the registration is with the company you work for and it is the company effectively who sign off the work. BG engineers are not allowed to have their own registration, to effectively stop them doing work outside of BG.
as for boilers, if you wanna go budget there's plenty of decent budget stuff about. Glowworm flexicom(5yr gtee from an approved installer), potterton apollo, we dont seem to get many problems from the vokera compact As we look after as well so that might be an ok choice. The main boilers seem decent, ideal mini HE (as much as i hate ideal) will do the job. take your pick

I have nothing to f with BG. I own my own company.

I was pointing out that my classification as competent is beholden upon me doing work for MY company. Partly I presume as it ensures I hold public liability insurance.

That said, if he does it all day for BG he is clearly not less competant when doing a foreigner for you, so if you know and trust him, moving on...

Previous owner fitted his own boiler to my house, not trained or competant in boiler fitting as far as I am aware. Had a has cert done as part of the sale, including replacing the gas feed which was not to spec, happy days....

...door?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. Has anyone had experiences of the Glow-worm easicom range? a 24kw for just over £600 inc vat with clock, std flue and stainless hex

leave the ravenheat well alone  .Go for any Mickyg has recommended , Gloworms a good choice

And please make sure that the tradesman also has Public Liability Insurance. 99% of company employed fitters do not have their own insurance.
