Barbaric or justice?

It is fair to say that a majority of westerners don't get the whole Muslim way of life but you can't help but feel a twinge of admiration for some of their judicial techniques.
If you were the parent of a child that was raped and beaten to death and was offered 'eye for an eye' retribution, then you would be hard pressed not to accept.
Is this going too far?

Why not go the whole way noseall? Flying jets into tall buildings is part of their 'judicial technique' too. If you admire them then you need to get off the fence and support them, warts and all.

I admit that i have cherry picked a small part of their laws and have used it with emotion attached.

Granted, if my child was caught shoplifting a bag of sweets i would not want his hand chopping off, no.

But it would make you think twice as a criminal, wouldn't it?

By the way i only won 1 of my 4 golf matches. However it was a singles match so i didn't have a partner dragging me down.

Why?

A nation can adopt, cherry pick or assimilate any part of another nations' stuff without having to fully adapt to their way of life, countries have been doing it for centuries.

If it did 'make you think twice', how come there is still crime in countries with sharia law?

How come the murder rate is considerably higher in the US than the UK, and which one has the death penalty?

Deterrents don't really work do they...

I certainly don't agree with summary violence as a deterrent, but it's not correct to say that deterrents in general don't work. A lot of people choose not to commit crimes because they don't want to go to prison. Therefore prison is a deterrent. If criminals were given a pension and a new car instead of a prison sentence there would be a lot more criminals and a lot more crime. Personally I'd be even more conscious of not committing crime if I thought it might result in me having my limbs chopped off. But there would still be some who would take the chance.

Most of those who do commit crime have either not been taught this principle properly or they commit the crime on the spur of the moment...

Therefore deterrents don't work in the majority of cases!

I worked in Saudi building schools..lol
They are a bunch of animals..snatching cameras from us for taking photo's.
Knocking cig's out of your mouth for smoking (with a stick).
Worst of all taking all our girlie mags at the airport
and making us use chinese tools where you would hit a nail and the hammer would snap

Of course, but then there are consequences in this country already...

Ok, whether it is a deterrent or not, do people feel comfortable with the whole eye for an eye idea?

If i had to endure anything horrible happening to my children by the hand of someone else and was afforded the privilege of watching them suffer the same fate, then i don't know whether i would pardon that person.

More likely i would light the fire or throw the switch or pull the lever myself.

Which is one of the many reasons why the punishment isn't up to the individual. We couldn't permit a situation where people were pardoning people for commiting heinous crimes. Better to leave emotion out of sentencing policy and treat all people as equals under the law. i.e. an impartial and experienced judge decides.

Yes, but the concept is non the less interesting, i.e. allowing those who are hurting the most to decide on the fate of the criminal.

The victims of crime go on hurting whilst the judge just hears another case.
