240V MR16 Lamps

Generally speaking, why should 240V MR16 lamps not be legal in the UK?

As for these particular ones, are they CE marked?

With a proper CE mark (meaning that the product meets the requirements of the applicable EC directives) that is, not the almost-but-not-quite-the-same symbol which might or might not stand for "China Export", and which in any event does not mean that the product complies. But would mean that the eBay seller was breaking the law.

The description for the MR16 ones says

MR16 Voltage: DC 12v

So send them back and get the ones you ordered.

so what do you actually have MR16 or GU10.
That's just like saying "so what do you actually have, a candle lamp or a bayonet fitting".

MR16 & GU10 are not related in a mutually exclusive way. It is not a case of a lamp being MR16 OR GU10 - the terms apply to different parts of it. It's like saying that a GLS lamp must have a BC base, and a lamp with a BC base must be a GLS and one with an ES base cannot be.

GU10 is a type of base, and MR16 (multifaceted reflector, 16/8" diameter) is a type of envelope.

You can get MR16 lamps with either a GU10 or a GX5.3 base:

Nearly all GU10-base lamps have MR16 envelopes, although you can get MR11:

Unfortunately it's going to cost £2.60 to send it back & the lamp's only £2.50 so its not really worth it!
The seller is a business - he is legally obliged to pay your return postage costs.

Do not take any bull**** from him, or eBay about you paying, do not let him or eBay try to quote any illegal Ts'n'Cs about returns not accepted, or at your expense etc.

He has committed an offence under the Sale Of Goods Act.

You should read the last sentence on page 10 of this: http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/general/oft913.pdf

Its a MR16 fitting with 90V-260V on it. Thanks for the link. Good to see I'm not alone.
I still don't see what is wrong with an MR16 lamp at that voltage - there are probably billions like it in the world.

That you wanted extra-low voltage is clear, but why are you so agitated about it being low-voltage, apart from that?

Have you tried to contact the ebay seller?
Looking at their feedback score and the item description I would guess that they might have made a genuine mistake.
