Now I have this UE40F5500, I'm looking for a keyboard for it and a USB HDD to record stuff to.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Cheers!

Check what kind of hdd your TV will work with. Some may require the HDD to be independantly powered.

These PVRs are reviewed very favorably (as Best Buys) in Which? :

Humax HDR Fox T2 £129.95 78%

Humax HDR-1010S £254.90 77%

Humax HDR-1000S £197.99 76%

Samsung TV's are a bit hit and miss with keyboards.

However this works on both of ours:
KEYSONIC ACK-540RF

As regards HDD's, I have used a couple of external usb drives (one samsung, one WD) with no problems. But as mentioned above, check if it needs a power supply. Having external HDD's on my PC I actually think they operate better with a seperate power supply, but others may disagree. I would also suggest that the drive you get can run without a fan in it's enclosure as there's nothing more annoying than having a whirring sound next to your TV!

Thanks guys.

Can't seem to find my TV in that list of model numbers.

Why is that no PVR manufacturer can produce an EPG as good as sky's?? I refuse to have sky on principle (and cost) but their EPG is so much better than any PVR I've ever seen. I have a HUMAX PVR by the way which is ok despite its slightly cumbersome EPG.

I, too, am bemused as to why there is a difference in various manufacturer's EPGs. I have found that the Humax EPG to be alot quicker than that deployed by Panasonic. Same goes for the various text facilities.

The EPG on my Panasonic DMR-BWT720 is very good. It loads and populates instantly and I have never encountered any problems.

It has to be said that earlier models from this manufacturer had a crap EPG in that about a third of it was taken up with ADVERTS!

In fact, I have found this Panasonic to be excellent in all respects with the one exception that some responses to the remote control are a little slow.

Possibly because:
http://www.bestavdeals.co.uk/samsung-ue40f5500-40-smart-television.html

"There's no 3D on this television which is fine if it doesn't interest you. Interestingly this means you can't use the wireless keyboard that Samsung sell with most of their Smart TV's - it only works if the TV is also 3D"

Aw, Shhhh.....Sugar!

If I'd known that, I may have been tempted to go for the 3D just to get the wireless keyboard functionality.

Because Sky, and every other EPG provider, will have patented and copyrighted the look and feel of their EPG.

It's the same with remote controls. Why can't a button (e.g mute) always be in the same place?

Make sure you read the book re: formats allowed, USB and other restrictions which may not be apparent to the newby owner - may well change one's choice of TV in future.

That doesn't really explain, patents apart why, I will have to obviously reserve judgment on the Panasonic, all other EPG's are awful.

That's a good point. The remote control of my otherwise excellent Panasonic doesn't have a mute button, which I think is an essential thing to have (for when my first wife wants to interrupt what I'm watching to tell me something important about the new shoes she bought).
