I learned to do rope and putty joints many moons ago.

Is there an updated method of sealing a 40mm plastic to 3" cast joint?

(I also learned to sweat lead to copper joint with a bread poke but that's for another day)

I'm not on the troll. It was a genuine enquiry. I did the first year of my plumbing apprenticeship over 30 years ago and left to become a nurse. And now I'm old and skint and renovating a flat I just bought. I want to try to do things right. You may notice my other posts to that effect.

Suspect simple answer these days would be to use a 'Flexseal' coupling to suit the respective pipe sizes. They seem to make a range to join anything from 3/4" upwards, although with the cast you'd have to cut the collar off first.

Plastic to cast fittings are available but sealing them obviously needs a cold jointing method. (Drains are easy, mortar jointing.)

You could use a rubber Fernco type fitting or something like this along with the traditional method of jointing you mentioned mate.

A career in the NHS is thankless, but I bet your knees are OK, a career in plumbing is also thankless & you have f.cked knees as an added bonus!!!!

I rather use the old way of joining with rope and putty into cast iron.

I did cast iron joining with rope and hot lead in college 20 years ago.

Knees are fine Richard. Managed to get out of the NHS into something a little more comfortable.

They have everything nowadays, so they do. In saying that, however, I remember spending three months working with a tradesman who sported a lump hammer, a large screwdriver and a bookies pen, and he managed to accomplish most plumbing tasks with ease.

I should have mentioned that this cast iron pipe is embedded in the wall of my kitchen and I can't get access to it to put an external joint around it. So looks like it needs to be some kind of internal device that my 40mm pipe is inserted into.

Thanks for the tips, folks.

I managed to get this sorted out by using a short length of 2" osmasoil pipe and then ran the 1.5" inside that and filled the gaps with Evostick wet grab.
