Hi all

I've been led to believe that the cost of a bricklayer should be approximately £150 per day.

Is that correct?

I'm looking for a bricklayer to build an extension which will be 6m x 6m x 6.5m and will be approximately 2.4m high.

There will be an 'empty space' of approximately 4sq m where the French Doors will be and another space for a regular size door and again another for a good size window.

Can I please have advise on not only the cost per day but also how many days it will take to complete.

I have not included the engineering bricks part of the job as I've no idea how many courses it will be.

Any questions (just in case I haven't explained it fully) please do ask me.

Prices can vary a lot depending upon your region.

I would expect to pay a premium in London for example.

I expect to make more than £150 per day as a building company boss, though it would be reasonable to be paid a flat rate for supplying labour only. Depends what you are expecting from your bricky.

'Empty space' as you put it, i.e. where doors and windows located, can be more time consuming than the brickwork itself, especially where narrower openings are concerned. Some half bricks have to be cut with a grinder and the reveals or jambs all need plumbing both inside and out. There is the additional faff of the lintel detail to sort also, i.e. block-work coursing anomalies at 2.1m etc.

Any brick detailing? Gables?

Are the foundations spot on level and coursed down from DPC?

Any drains to lintel over?

Any air vent issues in the over-site?

Get a price from a local bod.

Lots of things to take into consideration.

Yes, I am in London (NW). Yes, I do have drains that will have lintels over them. No brick detailing or gables.

I've had a look at Trustatrader.com

Unfortunately I don't know any bricklayers and although I would like to try it myself I really don't want to mess (****) it up.

I know this is probably a different thread and possibly forum section altogether, but does anyone have any opinions on Trustatrader?

So much more detail needed as Nose eludes to - i've just had a set of plans that have a 40mm German brick sized to be laid with NHL 3.5. Totally different cost point, especially in comparison with the blockwork flats we're doing elsewhere.

Get 3 or 4 guys out of your local rag and get them to estimate.

Get a price, not day work
On the quantity you have, and the distance from point of unloading to point of lay not exceeding 20 metres, budget for E1600, from DPC to plate.
You to supply mixer, bandstands and scaffold boards, water butt, hose, spot boards and barrow,
At last bricklayers are back to being film stars now.

It is if you can find one for approximately £150/day.

If you can't find one then it is not correct.

The daily rate will be whatever the person you choose to do the work will charge.

It will take as long to complete as the person you choose to do the work takes to do it.

Any questions
Yes.

Why do you think you are better off asking here than getting builders to come round and see the job, discuss it, ask their questions, and quote?

Haha. Sorry could not resist it.

If you go to your local Wickes at around 6.30-7am where you are,you will find group of european waiting to be picked up by contractors.

Brickie cost £90. /day, if you are willing to do the donkey work yourself.

Won't our Euro-cousins do donkey work then?

They will. Added cost 40£/ day. 😀😀 in addition to bricklayer.

don't use my builder.com

Ive used them twice each time stipulating 'must be of good standard' etc and both times they've been utterly ****. A high concentrate of chancers.. (sorry to anyone on there who is good). Problem is i think too many people not willing to critique a tradesman's poor work after they've been at their house. Wouldn't be so bad if you could do it anonymously.

Second one 'a bricky' couldn't operate a spirit level or his was full of treacle, **** me his wall was so bad i could put my hand between the level and the wall at the base against a plumb line :(
No i didn't pay him, and in his defence he knocked it down and rebuilt it, albeit only marginally better.

personally i would avoid a brickie who would do it for day rate, just price the job with them for job n finish and dont worry how many days it takes because they wont want to be there any longer than they need to be. just dont pay in full before the jobs done

im a brickie, id quite happily do it for £100 a day
I do a lot of day work, it can be simpler, I don't have to price the job up, the customer can change their mind as much as they like and I wont rush it or cut corners.
unfortunately if I lived in London it would probly be more as the cost of living here is way lower :)

:D

i did say it was only my opinion, in my experience day rate doesn't save money for the client. at my last company there were 2 lads who could do fascias quicker than you could beleive, but for certain people they had to work on day rate, they'd turn up late/ leave early/ nip for something (other jobs) and the job would cost the company what theyd want on price work or more. Im not sayin you are like this, just my opinion :D

oh yea I agree, but no matter how you pay them, they've got to be decent tradesmen, so its always best to get recommendations before you give anyone the job.

yeah definately, a good brickie or good team in theory should be able to do it quicker so the price work price wouldnt be that bad anyway
