European Elections

I was really looking forward to voting but, at the moment, it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to. :(

It will be interesting to see whether the smear campaign launched at UKIP pays off, I suspect it wont... I think the big boys are in for a kicking! :D

How could one forget. Been those daft PEB's that ruin teatime TV for ever it seems, does anyone ever ever actually sit through it and thinks Hmm, maybe I'll go out and put an 'x' in a different box?

Somewhat disillusioned by the whole process, and I do realise its a civic duty to vote, and a privilege, and ladies threw them selves under race horses etc.

Jeepers, even the process of trolling down to a dimly lit church-hall to see the same tellers, and the same staff who know me by name anyway, and a slip of paper, with a short pencil tied to a grubby thin ply 'booth'.

Goodness gracious me I have turned into my father.

Yes, lets vote for a load of MEP's who will have only 7% of the total vote in a parliment that only influences the commision.

Na, i'll be washing my hair.

I voted by post last week. The voting finishes tonight, doesn't it? So why does it take until Sunday to publish the results?

Is this another example of EU efficiency!?

I suspect that, as we are probably the only member state to vote on a weekday, although votes have been collated, but not counted, no declaration is allowed until the other states (who vote on a sunday, typically) have had theirs counted -electronically probably.

Just a thought. Do different.

If I had a polling card (which I don't) what would I be voting for?

Some other EU countries are sensible and vote over the weekend. All results will then be declared Sun evening.

Ah, I didn't know that. I though all countries would probably have voted on the same day. I can see that they wouldn't want the other EU countries to know about a UKIP landslide before their electorate voted in case it encouraged their people to vote for UKIP's equivalents! :D

Seriously, though, if that should happen would the EU call re-elections until pro-EU parties gained the majority?

More than likely, but the upside is, They'd chuck billions of Euro's at us and the other countries till they got the result they wanted.......

Hang on,, it would be our money they'd be handing back (but not all of it)

Interesting comment and illustration that was made on the BBC programme last night, I think by David Vine, about during the last general election the economy was foremost in peoples' minds, now that's not the case and perhaps immigration is.

It might be interesting to adapt Maslow's heirarchy of needs and apply it to a nation's concerns.

For example, the lowest and most important need is for food, shelter, etc. The kinds of things that the human life will fail without. (and why basic human needs, like food, shelter, etc are most important in countries torn apart by war, before any kind of higher needs can be addressed.)

Then the next need is for safety and security, including financial security.

The third level is for love, belonging and family. Perhaps, this is where the nation is now feeling pressure, due to immigration and the fear of losing one's culture. Which, is of course, the message of division preached by the scare-mongerers and doom-sayers. Please note, it is emminently possible to discuss immigration without resorting to abuse!

After that comes the need for esteem, self-respect. It's difficult to understand how this can be achieved once the divisive policies of some politicians have permeated the electorate.

Then finally self-actualization, i.e the need to reach one's full potential.

So perhaps David Vine was intimating that the nation's concern has moved on from the second level need because national financial security is more reliable, allowing the nation to look for higher level needs to be fulfilled. IMO, those higher level needs have been corrupted by some politicians to further their own agendas.
