I'd like a full width rear extension and would like to include a tiled roof that is in keeping with the house but the house roof pitch is extremely steep and it would be impossible to imitate fully. Near neighbours have opted for a straight forward front to back lean-to style tiled roof that looks terrible and a full width pitched roof would look really out of place.

Is it possible to say have a partially pitched roof tile roof that matches the houses roof style and incline and then have flat roofed top or even the facade of a tiled roof around the circumference of the extension with a flat roof behind?

Dummy pitched roofs is what they're called, not much info on them though.

A detached house round the corner from us has done just that, and it looks OK, so can't see why not in principle. You really need to have a chat with your local planning officer to get his/her view.

Yes it is. We have done a few. Have it designed so that the flat roof run-off is on the least visible elevation.

We have done a couple of biggies where one was built using trusses and the other was a cut roof. Both were hipped roofs. The only thing you see (different) is the small strip of lead on the run-off side. The ridge tiles hide the rest of the flat roof kerbing etc.

Thanks for your reply noseall.

Heres the thing...what is being proposed is a dummy pitched roof that is totally enclosed on all sides of the extension without an open flat roof run off.

Not sure how but drainage would be an issue and not sure if it would get past building control, any ideas? I can only think of having the flat roof level a few inches below ridge tiles and let the run off at outlets occur at the intersection and flashing of the main building over the tiles of dummy pitched roof.

Any deeper and I don't want to be mucking about with box gutters and the like, or going through the roof line with drainage, does that sound feasible? .
