Having watched a couple of programmes involving bull breeds and the American Pit bull types in particular I am not sure whether they(pitbull)should be banned but regulated more, breeding/ownership.

The irresponsible owners highlighted seem to fall into a certain category, that of scumbags, chavs etc.that do not understand the responsibility of dog ownership.

On the flip-side the responsible owners go out of their way to ensure their dogs are kept within the law.

I don't own a dog but these programmes made it clear(to me) that the dogs were getting too much of the blame and I think a dog licence should be reintroduced with more restrictions added.

Over the years humans have domesticated dogs and bred them for useful qualities - such as sheepherding, hunting / retreiving, catching vermin, tracking, racing, pulling sleds, gaurding and even turning spits (thank you QI :) )
The Bull Terrier breeds however have been bred solely for the purpose of fighting and killing each other and other animals for entertainment.
As such, much as I love animals I'd be happy to see them fade into extinction.

All dogs, indeed all animals, are potentially dangerous. However if a Yorkshire terrier goes beserk it's less likely to result in life threatening injuries and police marksmen being called.

I have done a bit of digging since hearing some of the expert opinions on bull terriers in these programmes and found a lot to be true.

The kennel club has over 180 registered breeds and only recommend two as child friendly. The Staffordshire Bull terrier is one.

Years ago we were hearing about other breeds attacking kids but that fizzled out after the breeds became "unfashionable" with dealers and other scum. Unfortunately it seems this breed is now the fashion.

I like animals though no wish to own any.

The pit-bull breed is banned in the UK..it's illegal to own one.

No it isn't illegal, the pit bull is not a banned breed, that is a common misconception.

Thanks, shows the pitbull isn't a banned breed if certainnrequirements are met.

That link just shows how contradictory the government is.

How can they say it is banned and then go on to say ' but you can have one if.......'

So the banned breed isn't actually banned, confusing eh?

Most Dogs are fine, but you MUST follow rules, dogs are pack animals, YOU have to be top dog, otherwise they will try to assert dominance. NEVER leave a baby, small child or someone vulnerable alone with a dog. Get a Labrador, lovely soppy things, but the same rules apply as always.

Or just muzzle 'em.
