Hello.

Im just about to buy my padstones for removing the load bearing wall with an RSJ.

My SE has speced 215mm deep Padstones (450x102x215)

The problem I have is if I fitted this size padstone I will need to shim up / pack the padstone up around 80mm for the RSJ to rest on top of it.

This doesn't feel right.

Atm Id be removing 3 courses of brick to get the padstone in.

Is this normal or does a different size padstone need to be used?

Can't quite understand; how deep are your brick courses?
Normally a 215 deep block will need three courses of brick removing - are your courses much deeper?

They must be. If I where to remove 2 courses then There wouldn't be enough room to install my 254mm RSJ. and a 215 block

If I where to remove 3 courses then Id need a padstone around 270mm deep to get close to the RSJ without excessive shimming

254 deep seems a big beam; what is the span?
We usually use shallower padstones cut from lengths of pre-cast concrete lintel (140 deep).

It seldom happens that the pad is sat on a full brick/block course.
You need to put a split brick/block under it (the padstone)

ok sound. Is it possible to buy half high bricks. I can imagine splitting them down neatly to be quite tricky.

The other soiltion I though about is a 280mm deep padstone which might fit. I need to messure again.

Id think this would be alright as its even bigger.

The beam is spamming 4.2M but is also the supporting RSJ for a connection when I remover a twin layer external wall for in the future.

Ok sound. Ive gone with a 215 deep padstone and Ill put a rip of half thickness bricks in :)

Thanks for the help
