Hello all

New homeowner here looking for some plumbing advice

The house we've bought has got an old 'back boiler' system. Which was temperamental at best of times according to lady we bought it from.

In short, we want to rip out all the old plumbing whilst the carpets are up and get a new system fitted in..

The question is, how difficult is it to remove the back boiler ourselves? I'm guessing once the boilers gone and systems been drained we'd be able to easily take out the old radiators and pipework?

Been advises a Worcester 31 boiler with 6radiators and 2 towel rails will set us back 3.5k including a few hundred to remove the old system.

Does that sound about right? Its a 2.5 bed terraced, old build (1940s)

Regards

Ali

AFAIK, this is a gas appliance so you can't remove the gas boiler yourselves. It needs a qualified GasSafe Engineer to do so.

Aaaah bugger

Is there any way we can isolate it so we can remove the rads n pipework?

AFAIK, no. You will need an engineer to at least disconnect and cap off the gas supply.

What is the current system?

I ask because there may be a lot more to new pipework if you have a back boiler system.

However, all that having been said, one of the expert professionals on here will give you better advice.

Hi, We had the same job done in February this year. It has to be done by a Gas Safe Engineer. The Company who provided and installed our new boiler ripped out the back boiler and all the pipes as well. We settled for a Baxi
Combi which is fine and the whole cost was just below £3K but did not include any radiators. We have now had a wood burner installed in the old fireplace!
This will be great for gas saving costs and also getting rid of all the old wood from 20 trees we had to cut down. Like you we have recently moved. Good Luck with everything. By the way, there will be a flue going up your Chimney this can be left behind if you are going to block off the opening.

You can take the rads and pipework out no laws against that just dont touch the flue boiler or gas fire, inc gas pipe, TBH the bits you can do wont take an engineer long to do so i would leave it to him if i was you

you need the gas capped off first before (working on a gas carrying part follows) you can remove the firefront to gain access to the boiler, then disconnect the pipes, disconnect the flue, pull it out.

I had one changed to a combi, a carpenter + a gas plumber, with a man in to core drill the wall for the flue, did the changeover in 2 days. Existing radiators and pipework reused; boiler connected in former airing cupboard.
