Tragic, but if you play with fire(arms). What a needless waste.
It's just a surprise that the NRA haven't used this as evidence of the need for even more guns - after all, if everyone else was tooled-up, someone could have got the kid, before he got the mother........

Never understood it... UK deaths from firearms stand at roughly 0.25 per 100,000 of the UK population. In the US they stand at over 10 per 100,000.
Oddly Switzerland, where I believe it is mandatory to own a gun, has one of the highest firearm death rates in continental europe.
Weird this stat of prevalence of gun ownership vs firearm death.

The swiss have a strong gun culture. They can carry their guns on show around in public.

Firearm fatalities are also, I believe, a lot lower in Canada than in the USA, despite parts of Canada also having a strong hunting ethos.

like anything in life if you are brought up within these life styles then you would be amongst it.
