1998 Islamic story

Fook!! I was only joking.

Old story, but these people never give up.

What a laugh - Councillor Hazel Simmons, chairwoman of equal opportunities

For clarification: 'Councillor Hazel Simmons, chairwoman of equal opportunities at Luton Borough Council said: "We are aware of a groundswell of public opinion and I personally believe this to be insensitive in what is now a truly multicultural society."'

Here is an excellent example of people in authority meekly pandering to the demands of one particular culture/religion. I cannot remember reading of a similar concession being made for other cultures.

Seriously - a 17 year old story?

And do you wonder why you can't go shopping in a large store on Christmas day or Easter Sunday and for the rest of the year only six hours on a Sunday?

And do you wonder why you can't go shopping in a large store on Christmas day or Easter Sunday and for the rest of the year only six hours on a Sunday?

Is this a counter to my mention of people in authority pandering to people of a particular culture?

On the contrary, it wasn't too many years ago when all shops closed on Sundays. I remember that distinctly. And, these days, I have seen shops open on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.

I suggest that, rather than pandering to Christian demands, we have actually moved away from Christian traditions in this country in many regards.

I cannot remember reading of a similar concession being made for other cultures.

Well clearly you can!

The concession for limited opening hours on a Sunday was made, in part, because of Christian concerns.

So 'pandering' to the Christian lobbyists is OK then?

(Personally the stores can remain closed for a lot longer and we can all go back to doing interesting things rather than shopping!)

And there's me thinking that Sunday closing was a law to encourage people to go to church, or perhaps to have a day of rest on account of God doing the same due to being a bit knackered after six day's graft. And I was led to believe he is omnipotent!

You learn something new every day.
