How to set a Pegler USV16/22 differential valve (for bypass)

Hi,

The house was built in 2006, and I was just reviewing the plumbing and noted the balancing valve was set completely wrongly at position 1 (it goes from 0-7). This means it is almost fully open and I have been wasting energy heating up the bypass loop all these years.

I understand that the way the valve is set is a factor of

1) The minimum flow rate of the boiler. I checked this and the Potterton Suprima series require a minimum flow of 9l/min or 2 imperial gallons/min

2) The pump. The pump is a 3 speed Sure Pump 65/130. I cannot find any reference to this pump anywhere on the internet and therefore I cannot find a graph to get the Head meters/feet figures. I found a roughly similar pump from Dab which suggests approx. 5.3 H m on speed 3 of the pump

3) I cannot find on the internet the graph for the UVC16/22. I found a similar one on Peglers website for part 678021 (22mm), and on that graph if I convert 5.3 H m to .52 bars and 9l/min to .54 metres cubed per hour, then on the chart, I am way way above the graph curves even if I set it to its maximum of 7...which implies to me no matter what I do I am heating the bypass loop.

At the moment I set it to 5 which is the point at which I can't audibly hear flow in the bypass loop when the heating is on, but can hear flow when the heating is off (although I don't have the equipment to prove its flowing at the minimum of 9l/min). But I can tell I am still heating up the bypass loop all the time because it's still getting hot without any pump over-run (i.e. it heats up before the electric heating valve closes)

I feel I am missing something here......any advice greatly appreciated.

Surepump was a trademark of Pulsar Direct, which is no longer trading. The pump was not made by them, but I can't find who actually made them.

The valve says USV16/22 and so does the Topic Title; but you then say you can't find any info for the UVC16/22!

What is going on?

I managed to find some info about the USV16/22 on the Pegler site. It was discontinued in 2003. The performance graphs are no longer available.

How many motorized valves do you have?

I apologise....I was fighting the auto correction on my tablet while typing the initial post and it mangled USV into UVC! I didn't mean to confuse.

It is an S-Plan set-up with 2 motorized valves.
 
A cheats way might be to shut the valve, run hot water and heating for ten mins

Turn heat and hot water off.

You will hear the the pump complaining, open the valve until you feel hear the valve open and the pump noise goes away.

It is now opening to allow a circuit when the two MVs close. Not strictly correct, but it will work

What makes you think it's not set correctly?

Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate it. The reason I came to the conclusion it was not set correctly was because I could hear water gushing through the bypass loop when the heating was on.
 
If you want to set it up without the pump curves ect put the abv on 7 (fully closed) turn off the hot water run the central heating with all the trvs fully open, with the system hot and before any of the trvs start to close slowly start to open the abv, when you feel the pipe after the abv start to become hot back the dial half a turn, the abv is now set.

In my post when I say feel the valve open, I mean you will feel the heat pass through the valve.

Either which way will work
