RCCB tripping

The upstairs sockets breaker is fitted after the RCCB on the consumer unit. It is right next to the ground floor sockets breaker.

The first floor socket may only be turned off at the breaker. The neutral (and earth) are still connected. A slight touch of neutral and earth on this circuit could trip the RCCB.

You are a genius my friend. I just went upstair. One of the cable runs for the extra sockets being fitted had the live and neutral cables touching. I opened it up and can now turn on the vacuum cleaner.

That is just crazy.....The whole circuit is off and yet it matters for the RCCB.

The 'whole circuit' consists of both live and neutral - but when you say it is 'off', it's probably only the live which is disconnected - so a fault involving just neutral (and earth) remains free to do its thing on the RCCB (but only if there is a significant load on the installation - hence it tripped every time to tried to use anything other than a very small load).

Kind Regards, John

For future work, both the line and neutral must be disconnected inside the consumer unit, it is not safe to just have an MCB turned off.

... after 'knocking off time', perhaps?
I thought about that.

And then I thought about the fact that an electrician who had screwed up and left a customer with a major problem should turn out to sort it, even at 19:00.

Did you mean Live and Neutral?
